Clinical Educator-Perioperative/Procedural Areas

OUTCOME Clinical nursing leadership is exercised through demonstration, staff development, and research. Staff are supervised, coordinated, and taught in formal and informal settings. The educational needs of nursing staff are determined. Educational programs are developed and presented.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

1.Develops and presents educational programs designed to meet the learning needs of all levels of staff within the Surgical Services Department.

2.Collaborates with nursing leadership, assesses standards of nursing care, and determines continuing educational needs of nursing personnel in areas where surgery is performed.

3.Collaborates with nursing leadership in maintaining and continually working toward improving standards of patient care.

4.Collaborates with nursing leadership in accepting primary responsibility for the orientation of new personnel assigned to the Operating Room.

5.Acts as an educational resource to all levels of nursing personnel, particularly in the area of perioperative nursing.

6.Acts as a clinical role model. a.Works with staff on the unit to provide education and return skill/demonstration necessary to practice perioperative nursing. b.Keeps abreast of surgical nursing techniques and procedures.

7.Collaborates with nursing personnel and advises in areas of patient education, particularly the pre-, intra-, and postoperative components of the nursing process.

8.Participates in committee activities of the Nursing Department as appropriate.

9.Assists other clinical educators in hospital wide educational activities as needed.

10. Works closely with Nursing Leadership to coordinate accreditation activities in all Perioperative and procedural areas.



1. Registered Nurse, BSN; MSN or M. ED preferred.

2. CNOR or eligibility to take Certification Exam required

3. Three to five years’ experience in Operating room nursing.


4. Skill in interpersonal relations and teaching. Demonstrated ability to work with groups. WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Stooping, lifting, standing long hours, and other strenuous activities at times.

2. Walks and stands up to 90% of work time.

3. Must be able to push and pull heavy weights (including patients) and to lift 50 pounds.
