Mount Auburn Hospital is a 217-bed teaching hospital affiliated with Harvard Medical School and is located in Cambridge, MA.  Founded in 1886, the hospital is dedicated to providing comprehensive healthcare to the residents of surrounding nearby communities.  Mount Auburn Hospital is part of Beth Israel Lahey Health, a new healthcare system in Boston, MA and surrounding areas. 

Cath Lab / EP Lab Department Description

The Invasive Cardiology Department at Mount Auburn Hospital is comprised of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab (Cath Lab) and the Electrophysiology Lab (EP Lab).  The department offers comprehensive diagnostic and interventional procedures to our patients.  The clinical staff is comprised of a mixture of registered nurses, cardiovascular technologists, and radiologic technologists.  The department is comprised of two Cath Labs, one EP Lab, and a six bed holding room for pre- and post-procedure care.  Additionally, Cath/EP Lab staff work collaboratively with the cardiac surgery team in the hybrid CVOR to care for patients undergoing TAVR procedure.  Invasive Cardiology staff is cross-trained to care for patients in all of the areas listed above. 

General Expectations

  1. Provides competent compassionate care based on scientific principles
  2. Cares for patients undergoing invasive and non-invasive procedures in the Department(s):  Cath Lab, Electrophysiology Lab, and CVOR (Cardiovascular Operating Room)
  3. Monitors both invasive and non-invasive hemodynamics during procedures and reports changes to the primary nurse and/or attending physician. 
  4. Recognizes changes in patient status and reports to primary nurse and/or attending physician
  5. Provides necessary interventions to/for the patient as allowed by state regulations and by the direction of the attending physician.
  6. Acquires/maintains competency in radiation safety principles
  7. Acquires/maintains competency in specialized Interventional Cardiology equipment
  8. Collaborates with physicians, registered nurses, other technologists, and perfusionists regarding individualized patient plan of care
  9. Ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment
  10. Good interpersonal and communication skills
  11. Acquires/maintains competency in use of the electronic medical record
  12. Collaborates with various departments to ensure continuity of care:  Emergency Department, SICU/MICU, CVOR, Perfusion, Echo Lab, Anesthesia, PACU, etc.
  13. Performs all other duties as assigned

Cath Lab Duties

  1. Acquires/maintains competency in all diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization procedures done at Mount Auburn Hospital.
  2. Acquires/maintains competency in hemodynamic interpretation
  3. Acquires/maintains competency in various procedure room roles as needed for the department (circulating, monitoring, and/or scrubbing)
  4. Available to be on-call on a rotating basis as assigned by the department needs.  On-call response time is 30 minutes or less.
  5. Acquires/maintains competency in resuscitation teamwork
  6. Acquires/maintains competency in the care of mechanical circulatory support patients (IABP, Impella, and ECMO)

EP (Electrophysiology) Lab Duties

  1. Acquires/maintains competency in all diagnostic and interventional EP procedures done at Mount Auburn Hospital.
  2. Acquires/maintains competency in cardiac pacing, defibrillation, mapping, and ablating for EP procedures
  3. Acquires/maintains competency in various procedure room roles as needed for the department (circulating, monitoring, and/or scrubbing)
  4. Applies principles for maintaining electrically safe environment for the patient and the healthcare team
  5. Differentiates the origin and route of conduction of tachycardia-related and bradycardia-related arrhythmias based on interpretation of intracardiac and surface leads
  6. Acquires/maintains competency in the set-up and operation of the ablation generator system

CVOR (Cardiovascular Operating Room) Duties

  1. Performs duties as needed for the care of TAVR patients in the CVOR
  2. Collaborates with CVOR and Perfusion staff for continuity of care

Requirements:

Requirements

  1. Bachelor’s degree in health-related field required
  2. Current BLS required
  3. Current ACLS preferred
  4. Radiologic technologist (RT-R), Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS), and/or Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist (RCES) highly preferred
  5. Available for flexible dayshifts per department needs between the hours of 0630 and 1730 (mix of 8, 9, or 10-hour shifts may be utilized)
  6. Available for on-call shifts
  7. On-call requirement:  1-2 nights/week in addition to every 4th weekend for all full-time and part-time staff or per departmental needs 
  8. Holidays per rotation
  9. Ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment required
  10. Cath Lab, EP Lab, or Interventional Radiology experience preferred
  11. IABP, Impella, and/or ECMO experience preferred
