Description:

OUTCOME

To provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and after birth. To help mother prepare for birth by educating her about birth options, birth process, and offering support services after childbirth. To help women have a safe, memorable, and empowering birthing experience.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

 

1.   Provide information and education to help mothers and their partners create a birth plan to allow informed decision making.                             

 

2.  Offers comfort measures such as massage, position support, and verbal encouragement.

 

3.  Practices relaxation techniques and breathing guidance with patients during labour.   

 

4.   Act as an advocate for the mother, helping her fulfill specific desires she may have during the birth. In this role the doula shall not dispense medical advice or act as a medical translator.

 

5.   Help the mother experience a positive and safe birth, whether an un-medicated birth or a cesarean.

 

6.   To help and support the mother with emotional and physical recovery after birth.

 

7.   Provides breastfeeding support to families and facilitates parent/infant bonding.

 

8.   Provides newborn care techniques such as diapering, bathing, and comforting.             

 

9.  Provides referrals to local resources such as parenting classes, pediatricians, lactation support and support groups to new parents.

 

 

Requirements:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  1. Labor Doula Certification required (CLD)
  2. Available on call on an as needed basis and will be compensated per birth attended.
  3. The doula will attend 75% of the births she is called to and arrive within 1-2 hours of being called, with the exception of those times she lets us know in advance that she is unavailable due to illness or vacation.
  4. Provides doula services to our primarily Spanish speaking population of patients at no cost to the patient. Must be fluent in English and Spanish.
