General Summary

  • Supervises 15 to 30 employees in the aseptic and/or ESL production and/or processing operations and makes sure all products and processed products coming off the line have the highest quality possible.
  •  Communicates closely with previous shift supervisor, incoming shift supervisor, production manager, and employees on production progress and pursue any problems that arise.
  • Displays leadership abilities that help empower line employees, leads, supervisors, and managers to performance levels that contribute to the achievement of corporate, plant, and individual goals.
  • Creates, develops, and executes strategic plans to hit plant goals and objectives set by production manager.
  •  Implements and follows all safety procedures as stated in MOS, GMP, safety standards, and code of ethics

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Supervises all associates directly assigned to the aseptic and/or ESL and/or Processing production teams and works closely with associates in the Logistics, Maintenance, Quality Assurance, Sanitation, Continuous Improvement, Process Teams, and Human Resource departments.
2. Conducts plant tours every two hours, reading multiple instruments, and noting any discrepancies. If any discrepancies are found, communicates with employees, and supervisors for root cause of problem. If needed, creates action teams with appropriate associates, and provides leadership in restoring problems that may arise
3. Inputs data found from plant tour and explanations of downtime of processes into DSR database.
4. Maintains a safe and clean working environment for all employees and visitors. Ensures all safety rules, plant rules, GMP, and code of ethics are followed by employees, supervisors, customers, and visitors at all times.
5. Trains, disciplines, and gives timely performance appraisals to current leads and employees on aseptic and/or ESL and/or Processing production teams. When needed, documents notable items of associates, both positive and negative, and places in personnel file.
6. Develops and implements an “open-door” policy, and is able to problem shoot, problem solve, and root-cause analysis with employees’ concerns and questions.
7. Communicates Standard Operating Procedures and plant rules to all production team members and ensures that they are implemented and strictly adhere to. When necessary, schedules employee safety CBT’s.
8. Ensures that only the highest quality products are produced, not only in the product itself, but in processing, packaging, coding, appearance, and every other indicator.
9. Conducts regularly scheduled team meetings including pre-shift meetings, and tailgate meetings.
10. Attends appropriate meetings including preventive maintenance meetings.
11. Attends appropriate Union meetings and is able to justify managerial actions to employees, Union Stewards, and Union Leaders.
12. Able to back-up or represent the production manager and operations manager as required.
13. Monitors annual production budget set by operations manager.
14. Meets production rates and yield as specified by the operations’ goals.
15. Other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to read data from charts, graphs, and instruments, and find digressions.

  • Strategic ability to create, design, and implement improvements to current procedures.
  • Able to think quickly on their feet, especially in emergency situations.
  • Can direct or participate in project management from concept to closure, including
  • selecting participants,
  • establishing process steps,
  • determining workload and deadlines,
  • overseeing review/revision cycles, and evaluating outcomes
  • Able to add and complete work of other production supervisors as needed.

  • Knows all the safety rules, plant rules, GMP, and code of ethics and follows them strictly at all time.
  • Has knowledge and experience in labor relations with Unions.
  1. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
  • California Dairy Pasteurization License ideal but not required.
  • California State Aseptic License will be required within the first 6 months of employment.
  • Certification in first aid and CPR required after employment. 
  1. Education and Experience
A technical/engineering degree (B.A) from four-year College or university required
Five to ten years related experience and/or training preferred
Previous dairy (UHT, ESL, Aseptic) experience beneficial
Materials and Equipment Directly Used:
  • Office machinery including: computers, hand-held calculators, printers, fax machines, copiers, and telephones.
  • Software including:  Microsoft Office, Lotus Notes
  • Safety equipment including: safety glasses, hair net, and ear plugs

Physical Demands: 
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; climb or balance; and talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel or crouch.  The employee is occasionally required to walk long distance. The employee may need to taste and smell the products to assure quality.
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
While coping with the physical demands, the supervisor must always wear the proper safety equipment
Work Environment: 
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The floor is constantly wet and slippery with spills, cleaning solutions, and water. The supervisor is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and extreme heat. The work environment is satiated with a multitude of smells. The supervisor occasionally works in high, precarious places.
The noise level in the work environment is loud because of the many high speed motors.
Proper safety equipment will be provided to supervisors to assist in contesting noise, and airborne particles affecting eyes.
