JOB SUMMARY: Business Specialist 2 (Cognos)

The Business Intelligence Specialist works with the business stakeholders, data analysts and the DBAs to provide an enterprise infrastructure to deliver the analytics and reporting provided to the key end users and decision-makers throughout the company. 
The role of the Business Intelligence Specialist requires strong technical knowledge of the IBM COGNOS Enterprise BI product suite. BI Specialists on a development track may troubleshoot and resolve problems that might occur in the day-to-day use by end-users across the enterprise as well as design and create SQL based frameworks, OLAP cube models and end-user reports. BI Specialists also assist in administration of reporting tools (Cognos) and should be capable of providing support, maintenance and upgrades to these applications.  Other key skill sets required are good communication skills, tools, standards, and processes used within Westfield Standard environments, process modeling and process improvement, mentoring and coaching, business requirements, test plan development and execution, and personal development.
A.  ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Listed in order of importance, frequency or sequence, 1=most important/frequent, etc.). NOTE:  Indicate non-essential accountabilities with an asterisk*.  All other functions are “absolutely necessary for this job”.  Administrative track activities are identified as such.
  • Develop and maintain OLAP cubes and BI reports for business reporting purposes
  • Create ad hoc reports from data warehouses and other systems as required using Cognos BI tools.
  • Work with users and business analyst to gather and document reporting and analysis requirements.
  • Develop and document standards for Business Intelligence Infrastructure.
  • Install, apply patches and upgrade COGNOS BI Tools as necessary. (Admin)
  • Work with Desktop Services to Develop process for deploying and tracking BI reporting licenses. (Admin)
  • Work with training to develop end user and power user training on BI tool suite.
  • Work closely with infrastructure and architecture groups to design, develop, and implement the Information Technology desired infrastructure.
  • Provide general maintenance and security for Cognos Tool suite. (Admin)
  • Providing technical assistance and troubleshooting support to other staff members.
  • Monitoring of software notifications and updates released by RDBMS vendors.
  • Create "Change Requests", resolve service requests and provide 24x7 on-call support. (Admin)
  • (*) Load and Maintain the Metadata repository.
  • (*) Enhance the Westfield Glossary.
  • (*) Perform other functions as assigned and actively participate in special projects as assigned.


  1. Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, Business or equivalent.
  2. Expert in IBM Cognos tools.
  3. Expert in SQL.
  4. Expert in understanding relational databases.
  5. Data modeling proficiency.
  6. Customer Focused
  7. Ability to work in a team environment.
  8. Excellent oral and written skills.
  9. Advanced skills in MS Access, MS Word and MS Excel.
  10. (*) Insurance knowledge a plus.
  11.  (*) DB2 on z/OS, UDB and SQL Server
T8010 Level 2:  Experience level of between 2 to 5 years as a BI Specialist.
               General Level of responsibilities. Will perform essential functions listed above with only minimal level of supervision from senior staff to handle some of the more complex tasks. Is able to develop complex Cognos reports with support from more senior BI Specialists.  Is able to administer the Cognos BI tools with some guidance from more senior BI Specialists.   Provides some leadership and technical direction to the group.   Is able to lead small groups in medium complexity projects.   Is able to pick up and understand new technologies and concepts on their own with minimal help from more senior staff.
