Commercial Lines Underwriter- Small Business Accounts

SUMMARY: Represents the company among a defined territory of agencies, with responsibility for the production, retention and profit of commercial lines business utilizing the highest level of technical underwriting ability. Maintains communications between the agencies and company and advises Regional Underwriting Manger of agency situations and market trends that may need attention. Makes responsible decisions regarding risk acceptability and pricing. Provides agency service and maintains intra-company communications.

A. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Listed in order of importance, frequency or sequence, 1=most important/frequent, etc.). NOTE: Indicate non-essential accountabilities with an asterisk*. All other functions are ?absolutely necessary for this job?. 1. Reviews and underwrites individual applications (new) and renewal business for traditional commercial lines accounts (written premium primarily $0- 25,000). Determines acceptability of risk in accordance with company guidelines and standards by reviewing the application and risk for exposure identification. 2. Establishes and maintains effective communication externally (between agents and company) and internally (within the company) regarding underwriting procedures and practices, growth/profit goals and objectives, and agency relations. 3. Maintains a book of business, including endorsements and renewals, and is responsible for the overall profit and growth of the book. 4. Notifies agencies of adverse underwriting decisions, underwriting requirements, status and declinations. Answers questions from agencies, policyholders or other external contacts and escalates issues to management as necessary. Negotiates with agents to reach positive and profitable outcomes. 5. Keeps current on state/territory issues and regulations, industry activity and trends and shares this information with team members, particularly the Mid-Market Field Manager. 6. Conducts special studies and projects as directed regarding underwriting procedures and practices. Submits recommendations to improve department results, including coverage, pricing or competitive issues. 7. Assists in the training and development of new employees assigned to the unit. 8. Maintain an operating knowledge of Westfield Companies standardized hardware, software programs, third party software, and processing procedures. 9. 1. A Bachelor's/Associates degree from an accredited college/university and a minimum of five years of P&C commercial lines experience


A Bachelor's/Associate's degree from an accredited college/university and two years of P&C commercial lines underwriting experience or three years of P&C personal lines underwriting experience, or Successful completion of the Westfield Group Graduate Development Program (GDP).

2. Demonstrable effective negotiation and sales management skills. 3. Strong customer service, organizational and analytical skills. 4. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

C. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Ability to communicate via different modes (telephone, memo, fax, electronic mail, etc.) 2. Ability to operate a computer and other office machines. 3. Ability to operate a motor vehicle and to travel.
