This Special Risk Underwriter position will be responsible for the Towing, Delivery and Ready Mix book of business.  The role will be responsible for both new and renewal business.  It is a unique opportunity to underwrite both smaller and larger accounts as well as interact with a very small group of agents dedicated to these niches.  In addition, this role will also work with Leadership to develop and implement the long term business plan for Towing.  Finally, this role is also responsible for the monoline Fidelity program.  There is a strategic initiative underway regarding this book of business and the Underwriter will be responsible for overseeing this plan as well.

SUMMARY: Represents the company among a defined territory of agencies, with responsibility for the production, retention and profit of business utilizing the highest level of technical underwriting ability.  Maintains communications between the agencies and company and advises the Region Leader of agency situations and market trends that may need attention.  Makes responsible decisions regarding risk acceptability and pricing.  Provides agency service and maintains intra-company communications.  Builds very strong relationships with agency producers
A.  ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Listed in order of importance, frequency or sequence, 1=most important/frequent, etc.). NOTE:  Indicate non-essential accountabilities with an asterisk*.  All other functions are “absolutely necessary for this job”.
  1. Reviews and underwrites individual applications (new) and renewal business for accounts (generally between $10k-50K premium).  Determines acceptability of risk in accordance with company guidelines and standards by reviewing the application and risk for exposure identification.
  2. Establishes and maintains effective communication externally (between agents and company) and internally (within the company) regarding underwriting procedures and practices, growth/profit goals and objectives, and agency relations.  Responsible for development and tracking of agency business planning process.
  3. Maintains a book of business, including endorsements and renewals, and is responsible for the overall profit and growth of the book.  Evaluates loss referrals, completes large loss reports and responsible for developing post loss underwriting action plans.
  4. Notifies agencies of adverse underwriting decisions, underwriting requirements, status and declinations.  Answers questions from agencies, policyholders or other external contacts and escalates issues to management as necessary.  Negotiates with agents to reach positive and profitable outcomes.
  5. Acquires reinsurance as needed for individual accounts per guidelines.
  6. Keeps current on state/territory issues and regulations, industry activity and trends and shares this information with team members, particularly the Mid-Market Field Manager.
  7. Conducts special studies and projects as directed regarding underwriting procedures and practices.  Submits recommendations to improve department results, including coverage, pricing or competitive issues.
  8. Assists in the training and development of new employees assigned to the unit.
  9. Maintain an operating knowledge of Westfield Companies standardized hardware, software programs, third party software, and processing procedures.

Requirements at any level:
  • A Bachelor’s/Associates degree from an accredited college/university and a minimum of five years of P&C commercial lines experience

  • 5 or more years P&C commercial lines underwriting experience and possess a AU, CIC or CPCU designation

  • A Bachelors degree from an accredited college/university and Successful completion of the Westfield Graduate Development program.
  • Demonstrable effective negotiation and sales management skills.
  • Strong customer service, organizational and analytical skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A valid driver’s license and a driving record that conforms to company standards.
