Job Title:   Staff Accountant

SUMMARY:            Prepares financial statements and handles all cash inflows and outflows for division.  Also responsible for filing and remitting payment to all states for surplus lines taxes
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS(Listed in order of importance, frequency or sequence, 1=most important/frequent, etc.). NOTE:  Indicate non-essential accountabilities with an asterisk*.  All other functions are “absolutely necessary for this job”.
  1. Prepares monthly financial statements.
  2. Completes monthly, quarterly and annual surplus lines statement for multiple departments of insurance.
  3. Manages and oversees check capturing & deposit activities.
  4. Advises SBS leadership on accounting issues.
  5. Assists internal staff on billing procedures.
  6. Ensures that our aged receivables are current at all times which include working with agents to mandate timely payment on accounts – triggering collection procedure when necessary.
  7. Reviews and manages SBS bank accounts.
  8. Participates in frequent communication regarding accounting issues with external customers and internal business partners at all levels in the organization.
  9. Performs research and update documentation to ensure compliance with both Statutory and GAAP accounting standards.
  10. Performs reconciliations and assumes accountability for asset and liability account balances for ledgers.
  11. Calculate monthly accrual and other month end/daily entries based on statutory and/or GAAP guidance.
  12. Develops reports as needed.
  13. Analyzes company payables/ receivables.
  14. Responsible for payment to:  Insurance Departments, Companies and agents on a daily basis.
  15. Works with home office to ensure all accurate financials are received each month.

Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field or equivalent years of experience.
Minimum of three years experience in the field.
Intermediate to advanced personal computer skills, including Excel.
Competency strengths include financial/analytical acumen, communication skills and attention to detail.

  1. Ability to operate various types of automated information processing equipment (computers, copiers, fax, etc).
  2. Ability to read a standard type document.
  3. Ability to communicate via a standard telephone.
  4. Ability to travel.
  5. Ability to physically and accurately file.
  6. Occasional lifting up to ten pounds.
