Position Summary:
  • Based on Job Level within this class; responsible for configuration, purchase, installation, maintenance, monitoring and upgrades to all assigned servers, operating systems and storage devices. 
  • Maintains security and business continuity practices on all assigned systems including daily data backup and protection processes. 
  • Understands the operating system and network communications necessary to deliver applications to the desktop, and works in unison with the network engineers to trouble shoot performance and connectivity issues.
  • Provides detailed documentation on configuration for each server, develops and maintains upgrade and expansion plans, and provides input for budgetary purposes. 
  • Responsible for tracking all software licensure and assures each system is compliant. Position requires a moderate understanding and practical working experience with Citrix virtualization using XenApp and XenDesktop Services; Provisioning Services; Citrix Secure Web Access; desktop image creation and ongoing support.
  • Performs installation; configuration; maintenance and support of servers in a Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop environment.
  • Provides support for end-user community utilizing Citrix resources, including ensuring network connectivity and end-user accessibility and performs diagnostics as required.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
Other duties may be assigned.  Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of the job.

  • Will have responsibility for secure delivery of applications and desktops using Citrix architecture to end users as well as maintenance of existing Xen Desktop and Xen App/Presentation Server infrastructure, including deployment of new infrastructure.
  • Based on vendor or developer's requirements, configures, quotes, and receives hardware and software into system.  Builds, tests, and implements servers per specifications.
  • Assist management as requested with configuration, quote, and receiving processes.  Builds servers to comply with contractual requirements.
  • Provides or obtains tools to monitor, sustain all servers and insure proper performance.  Reports and or reacts to unusual trends with metrics.  Ensures latest software upgrades are in place and all enhancements are implemented per specifications.  Prepares yearly plan for sustaining all servers migrating to new or upgrading existing operating systems.
  • Monitors server performance and recommends modifications to sustain or improve performance to the senior or lead server analysts. May make adjustments to systems to improve performance under the guidance of senior and lead personnel.
  • Works closely with the Applications and Security team to insure all servers are properly protected per security policies and procedures.  Maintains appropriate data backup solutions for all servers and storage systems.
  • Implements server/storage system security, monitoring compliance, providing documentation or reports, and managing audits.
  • Ensures and maintains proper storage systems for each server whether directly attached or part of the corporate SAN.  Monitors performance and growth of data, develops ongoing sustainment plan, and implements all enhancements as required.
  • Responsible for data storage on specified systems. Monitors specified systems for growth, performance, and ability to provide the right business storage solutions. Provide input to senior personnel to establish plans and budget for upgrades, adding storage space, and making sure the technology continues to fit the business unit’s needs.  
  • Understands the contractual arrangement that has been negotiated with the vendor (support, upgrades, service hours, contractual obligations, and all other issues related to the server product). Maintains library for all system licenses and insures current compliance of each server from a licensure standpoint.
  • Responsible for ensuring contracted obligations are adhered to, such as licensing requirements. Keeping track of scheduled system upgrades; Keeping senior and lead informed of changes in maintenance costs
  • Utilizes disciplined methodologies, defined by the organization, to move all new or enhanced servers into production.
  • Responsible for the implementation of disciplined methodologies to accomplish server related activities; ensure servers are not placed into production until thoroughly tested.
  • Responsible for documenting disaster recover requirements for the servers and storage systems based on the criticality of the business applications and ensuring they are incorporated into the overall organizations disaster recovery plans. Performs periodic tests of the backup data for viability and restoration qualities.
  • Schedules/Coordinates implementation of server and storage system changes with all affected organization (other system owners/users, applications, telecommunications, management, etc).  Ensures all changes strictly follow the organizations change control process.
  • Maintaining business knowledge of how the servers are utilized by the organization (the types of OS, storage systems, and applications being ran and the overall end user requirements).  Designs and develops solutions to ensure they meet business requirements.  This includes incorporating appropriate server architecture and parameters, determining appropriate core hardware and software to provide maximum benefit to the user community.
  • Implements defined technology to support business needs of organization.
  • Works closely with the applications and network teams to diagnose and correct performance issues.  Provides accurate documentation for all issues utilizing the organizations systems or databases as required.  Routinely examines issues for repeating patterns and trends.
  • Coordinates troubleshooting efforts in support of business needs with minimal direction from Architect or manager. 
  • Serves as a subject matter expert (SME) for the virtual application/desktop environment and maintain consistent and current patch management to all Citrix-related systems. Will provide Tier 1 support staff with tools necessary to support virtual applications and desktops.
Management Responsibilities:
Regular review with management on performance against project plans or network development; ability to define detail level of task for specific assignment. No delegation authorized. Can be placed on call and subject to callback for system issues. Directs the support of both non-critical and critical systems; may provide oversight to less experienced administrators.



       Education and/or Experience

  • Minimum 4 to 7 years of experience with Citrix Xen App 4.5 or higher.
  • Experience in the use/administration of Citrix UPD, Citrix Netscaler, Web Interface, and Edgesight.
  • Experience with Xen Desktop/Xen Server/Provisioning Server is a plus.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year College or university; or three to seven years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
