Job Description:

Today, Via Christi Health is the largest provider of health care services in Kansas. We serve Kansas and northeast Oklahoma through our doctors, hospitals, senior villages and health services.

Position Summary:
Responsible for the delivery of spiritual care to patients/residents, their loved ones, and, as appropriate, staff.  Responsible, as part of the interdisciplinary team, to ensure that religious/spiritual needs of patients/residents and their loved ones are met in the areas to which she/he is assigned.
Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Gathers and evaluatesrelevant data pertinent to the patient's/resident’s situation and/or health and well-being.
  • Develops and implements aplan of care to promote patient/resident well-being and continuity of care.
  • Enters information into the patient's/resident’s record that is relevant to the patient's/resident’s medical, psycho-social and spiritual/religious goals of care.
  • Actively and clearly collaborates with the organization'sinterdisciplinary care team, as well as area clergy / faith community leaders.
  • Adheres to and seeks guidance for decision making and professional behavior from thecode of ethics of the profession and the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services.
  • Respects the confidentiality of information from all sources, including the patient/resident, the patient/resident record, other team members and family members, and abides by all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Actively models and collaborates with the organization and its interdisciplinary team in respecting and providing culturally competent person-respected care.
  • Provides timely and sensitive chaplaincy care to the organization's staff via individual and group interactions; the chaplain provides chaplaincy care to the organization in ways consonant with the Via Christi Health Mission, Core Values and strategic direction.
  • Assumes responsibility for continued professional development, demonstrates a working and current knowledge of current theory and practice and integrates such information into practice.
  • May perform other duties as assigned or requested


Job Requirements:

Education and/or Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Theology or closely related field (e.g., divinity, religious studies, pastoral ministry, pastoral studies, spirituality), preferred.
  • Successful completion of two (2) unitsof Clinical Pastoral Education or equivalency, preferred

Technical Skills

  • Possesses the language and computer skills necessary to communicate effectively and to document as necessary.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services.
  • Demonstrates familiarity with religious/spiritual practices of various traditions and is sensitive to the differences.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Board Certified by and in good standing with a national certifying agency, preferred (e.g., The National Association of Catholic Chaplains, The Association of Professional Chaplains, or The National Association of Jewish Chaplains).
    • If not board certified at time of hire, obtain board certification within a reasonable period of time (e.g., 3-5 years) if in a non-on-call or Via Christi Villages position, as determined by the organization at the time of hire.

  • Frequently required to carry or lift items weighing up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally required to carry or lift items weighing up to 25 pounds for short distances.

  • Occasionally performs activities that require stooping, bending and reaching, squatting, balancing, and trunk twisting throughout the day.
  • Constantly able to communicate verbally and in written form.
  • Frequently able to detect and discern both loud and soft sounds such as phone calls, questions from those served, and comments/instructions from colleagues.
  • Frequently able to use hands and fingers to type, write, and file.
  • Frequently able to use different types of visual perceptions to perform activities such as evaluating patients/residents, reading written materials and viewing computer screens.
  • Occasionally required to detect unusual odors that could indicate environmental issues.

Working Conditions:

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Occasionally exposed to blood, body fluids, fumes, or airborne particles.
  • Occasionally exposed to outdoor elements.
