LAB COLLECTION PROCESSING TECH

 

Job Description:

Today, Via Christi Health is the largest provider of health care services in Kansas. We serve Kansas and northeast Oklahoma through our doctors, hospitals, senior villages and health services.

Position Summary:
The Collection Processing Technician 1 and 2 is a member of the Pathology/Laboratory staff responsible for assisting the health care team in the timely and accurate collection, transportation and processing of specimens for clinical laboratory analysis and other related duties.  They assist in training, workflow processes, and procedure writing. They are responsible for integrating with the rest of the facility to maintain the patient centered culture of the hospital.
 
The Collection Processing position is divided into two levels depending upon the skill sets particular to that skill level. Skill sets are identified at the end of this document.
 
Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions: 
  • Collects blood specimens from patients, following established venipuncture, arterial or skin puncture procedures. Collects specimens using appropriate methods and equipment.
  • Prepares and transports specimens to the laboratory in a timely manner, ensuring specimen integrity.  Specimen integrity is maintained through accurate collection, centrifugation, aliquotting, storage, and dispatch to the appropriate testing location in a timely manner.
  • Provides excellent customer service in keeping with the Via Christi mission, vision and core values.
  • Acts as primary liaison between patients, physicians, and the public for the laboratory.  Initiates service recovery procedure to ensure resolution of problems and prevent future ones.   
  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment related to specific area.  Keeps work area in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Improves patient safety in the delivery of health care by understanding and applying the patient safety goals.
  • Diligently maintain compliance with all Joint Commission, CAP, AABB, DOT and other regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Serves as a resource to others utilizing basic knowledge of over 2000 lab tests on our menu.
  • Participates in investigations and resolutions of operational problems with Shift Coordinator or Manager.
  • Utilizes knowledge of human anatomy/physiology to reduce injury risk to patient.
  • May perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Job Requirements:

Education and/or Experience
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.  Experience preferred.      
Behavioral Skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.   
Technical Skills
  • Typing and basic computer skills.

  • Phlebotomy Certification is encouraged

Working Conditions
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to blood, body fluids, fumes or airborne particles, and sharp objects potentially contaminated with Blood Borne Pathogens or other infectious agents. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

  • This position has direct patient contact that provides care to neonate, newborn, children, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations.
