Position Summary:

Provides oncology education information to patients and to the public regarding cancer diagnosis,treatment, prevention, quality of life issues, palliative care, clinical trials and support group information. Also provides cancer prevention information to the public regarding risk factors, lifestyle choices, and nutritional Intervention. This work requires an overall understanding of care and services across the oncology continuum, as well as oncology terminology. Coordinates access to Resource Center for meetings/conferences. Markets Via Christi services through the cancer center. Assists with outreach activities as  required by ACOS standards for an approved cancer program. Also supports the coordination of patient services for the Integrative Therapies Program within the Cancer Institute.
Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
  • Actively participates in and encourages actions that promote good public relations with patient families, visitors, and the community.
  • Ensures organizational privacy and confidentiality, handling difficult situations in a discreet and professional manner.
  • Uses quality improvement thinking on a continuous basis, developing plan of action for improvements.
  • Establish cancer survivorship program offerings to cancer patients.
  • Requires working knowledge of clinical trials and protocols.
  • Provides oncology education information, as requested, to clients including Via Christi patients, family members, and the general public.
  • Lead and support Cancer Institute Integrative Therapies, which includes Massage Therapy, Media Room, Art Therapy and Music Therapy. Responsibilities include providing regular, updated information to patients and staff regarding integrative therapies; overseeing coordinated weekly activities and evaluate and track activity of the Cancer Institute Integrative Therapies.
  • Maintains a supply of oncology information for the resource center as well as education room in Cancer Institute. The information supply includes brochures, books, audio tapes, videotapes, CD-ROM’s, and additional learning tools as identified. Directs clients how to perform independent searches for information on the Internet or using the resource center educational materials.
  • Develops and maintains conference center calendar with community and internal partners. Supports and communicates the mission, philosophy and goals of the Cancer Resource Center, Cancer Integrative Therapies and Via Christi in daily work performance and interactions with customers, staff, patients and visitors.
  • Supports early detection/screening activities.
  • Assists in grant and revenue generating efforts to sustain program. Assists in establishing and monitoring program budget for grants as well as operations.
  • May perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Education and/or Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree (BA.) from four-year college or university.
  • One or two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) with two to three years oncology related experience. Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) Preferred experience in community program development.

  • Must be able to communicate clearly in written format and verbally. 
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
  • Nurse with current Kansas license required.
  • Oncology Certified Nurse preferred or will obtain within three years of date of hire.
  • CPR certification required
