Brokerage Accounting and Finance Manager

Description:

Summary

Manages the preparation of financial and statistical reports that reflect earning, profits, operational measurements and trends, and other financial results for the U.S. Xpress Logistics strategic business unit (SBU). Performs functions to manage general accounting activities to ensure generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) are followed in the preparation and presentation of financial reports.  Develops and implements methods and procedures for the preparation of periodic financial reports and results of operations, including ensuring the accuracy of details such as journal entries, cash, assets and reconciliations. Formulates and administers approved accounting practices for the SBU to ensure that financial and operating reports accurately reflect the condition of the business and provide reliable information necessary to control operations.
 

Duties & Responsibilities

 

  • Manages, oversees the SBU’s accounting functions including monthly review of all journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations for SBU in accordance with GAAP

 

  • Provides oversight of accounting team to ensure compliance with assigned Sarbanes Oxley key controls.

 

  • Assists in quarterly and year-end financial audit

 

  • Develops SBU financial forecasts, business plans and models.

 

  • Manages the administration, and communication of the SBU variable compensation plans. Including regular review of financial and operational effectiveness of plans, periodic updating and roll out to managers and staff.

 

  • Manages the development, measurement and reporting of profit and loss data.

 

  • Manages the generation and distribution of division and customer-level revenue and margin reports.

 

  • Develops policies and processes to help support business projects and initiatives.

 

  • Manage and lead financial initiatives, personnel and process improvement for the designated SBU.

 

  • Responsible for SBU ongoing cost control and other internal controls that maximize profitability.

 

  • Prepares various detailed financial and non-financial analyses for key company initiatives as needed.

 

  • Identifies opportunities for improvement in operational and accounting procedures and implements successful solutions. 

 

  • Analysis of all expenses for the U.S. Xpress Logistics department.

 

  • Coaching and development of staff reporting to this position.

 

  • Business intelligence – application of financial data in order to make operational decisions and execute effectively/efficiently

 

  • Performance Index meetings – lead monthly operational KPI meetings

 

  • Participate in training events to gain additional business acumen
     

Qualifications

 

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting required. Master’s degree preferred.

 

  • CPA preferred.

Experience

 

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting and/or finance experience required.

 

  • Minimum 1 year of leadership experience required.

 

  • Public accounting experience desired.

 

  • Specific knowledge related to the transportation industry highly desired.
     

Skills/Certifications

 

  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

 

  • Strong Knowledge of internal control procedures and management information systems

 

  • Working knowledge of office automation and computerized financial applications

 

  • Ability to prepare and analyze complex financial reports

 

  • Ability to effectively communicate in writing and verbally

 

  • Previous experience in a supervisory or leadership role

 

  • PC Skills:  AS/400, Microsoft Office Suite, SQL relational database (s/a Showcase Query)
