United Surgical Partners International, Inc. (USPI) is based in Dallas, Texas and is a leading operator of short stay surgical facilities including surgery centers and hospitals.  USPI operates 214 surgical facilities in the United States consisting of 200 surgery centers and 14 surgical hospitals.  All of USPI’s facilities include local physician owners, and 144 of these facilities are also partially owned by various, not-for-profit healthcare systems. 
      The position is Director of Data Warehouse for USPI. Information Technology will work closely with the Operations Performance Management team in developing operational performance management tools.  This role is responsible in participating in the effort to develop multiple DW/BI applications utilizing one enterprise wide business intelligence tool.  These DW/BI applications will include clinical, financial reporting, cost information, operations supply chain management, procurement and several other BI applications.  This role specifically will utilize one of the major DW/BI tools, SAP Business Objects, Oracle BI, or IBM Cognos to develop the data warehouse in support of BI applications that pull information from up to 30 different information systems. Utilizing one of the DW/BI tools, this role will work with the operating groups, design and implement both the desktop and mobile versions of the BI applications.    
      The scope of this role will include working directly with the operating and HQ teams to define the business requirements, and then design the associated databases and interfaces in support of the BI applications utilizing one of the BI tools described.  This role will be responsible for working with the Financial Operations resources as they design the dashboards, reports, and analytics using this tool.  This role will work directly with the field leadership teams, the Sr. Management leadership teams, and the functional experts in designing and implementing the BI applications.
      Other responsibilities include collecting and analyzing internal and external data to generate knowledge and value for the organization, including business process decision support at the strategic, tactical and operational levels.  Responsible for technical leadership for all of the activities supported by the enterprise data warehouse, master data management, and enterprise integration teams.  Provide transformational technical guidance for the analysis, design, and architecture of data interfaces, data procurement and data integrity associated with reporting, analytics and enterprise data stores.  Work closely with business functions, IT, and technology suppliers to insure that data is appropriately and securely transformed and shared between applications, and that our goals for integration and integrity are achieved. Coordinate and direct the activities of all assigned data warehouse, integration, and master data management areas and ensure that that policies, procedures and standards are followed with emphasis on support for data integration/integrity and data/event mapping practices.
      This role will report directly to the IT Vice President, Financial Systems for USPI, and will be part of a team working on improving business processes across the organization, with the specific intent of delivering high quality surgical procedures, in a highly efficient and cost effective manner.




  • The successful candidate will be experienced in leading the design and implementation of databases and associated tools in support of BI applications utilizing one of the major BI applications.  Healthcare experience is a plus, but not mandatory.  
  • The successful candidate will be highly analytical, and have a proven track record of taking disparate information, and creating meaning through the design databases to support reporting, desktop information design, and mobile information design.
  • The successful candidate will have strong leadership capabilities, with the ability to work with multiple different individuals, including Sr. Leadership, Functional experts, IT, and the field operating teams.
  • This individual will have a strong working knowledge of database design, interfaces, and ETL tools.
  • Experience in financial roles is a plus, but not a requirement.
  • Responsible for all data movement into, within, and out of the data warehouse, data marts, data stores and reporting cubes; and for identification of process improvements related to such activity
  • Responsible for data quality of all data and products associated with the data warehouse, data marts, data stores, master data, and reporting cubes
  • Participate with various project teams to ensure the delivery of large-scale projects within time and budget
  • Act as a resource to coworkers; mentor and develop them in technology best practice
  • Participate in team and professional meetings and provide input to business partners
  • Oversees the translation of strategic requirements into a usable enterprise data and information architecture, which may include an enterprise data model, associated meta-model, common business vocabulary and taxonomies to be used to guide enterprise solution development and achieve consistency of data and information assets across the application portfolio
  • Leads the definition of enterprise data and information architecture principles, policies, standards and procedures
  • Drives the development of an enterprise metadata management and repository strategy to manage all enterprise data & information assets, including project data artifacts
  • Ensure all aspects of operability are delivered as part of the implementation process
  • Management of technical staff



  • Database administration for all in-house databases supporting BI applications
  • Design, own, and maintain data models throughout the enterprise, including conceptual, logical, and physical models
  • Ability to work in collaboration with various IT and business groups to understand enterprise data requirement
  • Assist with defining data architectures, standards, best practices, and governance processes
  • Experience with leading tools for modeling, extracting, reporting, and management of databases and interfaces
  • Fluent with database design concepts and SQL
  • Experience with ETL or a programming language
  • Evaluates user requirements, technical specifications, software/systems and designs solutions to meet these business needs
  • Following implementation, responsible for day to day support of the data residing in the data warehouse, data marts, and data extraction processes
  • Seven to ten years experience in the support of data warehouses, data quality, data interface, enterprise integration engines, and master data management solutions
  • Very strong understanding of enterprise data warehouse methodologies (Kimball, Inmon, and/or Hammergren) with one or more of the following technologies: Erwin, Rational Rose, Power Designer, Embarcadero, System Architect, and/or Data Architect.
  • Needs understanding of Business Objects, Business Objects Universe Designer; Business Intelligence and analytics
  • Thorough knowledge of integration methods such as: web services, file transfer, shared database, remote procedure invocation, and messaging
  • Thorough knowledge and hands-on experience in ETL development, testing, integration, and monitoring
  • Working knowledge of development technologies in deploying and supporting web-based and n-tier applications
  • Experience managing Master Data throughout lifecycle, including data quality, metadata, and workflow technologies (e.g., ESB, BusinessWorks, ESB, and MDM)
  • Experience with Data Quality tools (e.g., Informatica, Trillium, and/or IBM QualityStage)
  • Experience with PII, SOX, data governance, data classification, data security, and data encryption
  • Experience with source control tools (Subversion or similar) and defect tracking systems required
  • The ability to keep abreast of new technological developments and industry trends
  • The ability to demonstrate knowledge and expertise with software tools and an ability to evaluate
  • The ability to engage with business areas and effectively translate needs into business solutions
  • Strong leadership, planning and project management skills
  • Manage of team of analysts that support SQL Reporting (SSRS) and Sharepoint (administration and development)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent skill level in relational databases like Oracle, SAP, and SQL Server (minimum five years experience)
  • Excellent skill level in SQL Server SSRS (reporting system) and SSIS (data movement) systems (minimum three years experience)
  • Excellent database architecture understanding and experience
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office tools
  • Detail and process oriented
  • Excellent ability to bring multiple personnel with varying opinions together to a consensus
  • Understanding of how front-end (.NET) and back-end (SQL Server) information platforms work together
  • Must be able to work in a cross functional team environment

Bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics, system analysis, business, or equivalent experience
