JOB TITLE: Insurance Verification/ Back-up Scheduler
DEPARTMENT: Business Office
This person is responsible for identifying patient’s financial status and subsequent out-of-pocket expense prior to services being performed at the Center. This person acts as the patient representative and is often the first on-site contact the patient has with the Center. Additionally, this person is responsible for collections and related duties on patient accounts. Position is expected to be knowledgeable of managed care contracts as they relate to billing/reimbursement. Position serves as back-up for surgery scheduler; planning and scheduling for physicians’ surgical and related appointments. Individual shall be flexible to perform a variety of duties as assigned by the business office manager. This position requires strong interpersonal skills to regularly interact professionally, promptly, and courteously with patients, physicians, and their offices and other Center personnel to maintain strong public and community relations while responding to their inquiries/requests.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Include the following. Other duties may be assigned:
Obtains insurance information, copies of insurance cards, patient signatures, and collects the amounts to cover the patient’s portion of financial responsibility.
Enters the patients’ insurance information accurately in the computer system to produce a clean claim form. Maintains an error rate of less than 2%.
Serves as relief for scheduling desk.
Receives, screens, and routes incoming calls in a professional manner by the third ring.
Seeks involvement in activities that promote professional growth and behavior, and promotes and assists employees in the same.
Informs Business Office Manager of applicable day-to-day situations.
Calls and verifies benefits and eligibility; obtains authorizations as necessary.
Verifies that authorization has been obtained for the date of surgery by the doctor’s office, and follows-up with doctor’s office if authorization has not been obtained.
Completes verification sheet and enters above findings in computer under respective patient.
Files verification sheet in the patient’s Medical Record.
Informs patient beforehand of any outstanding co-pays and deductibles due at time of surgery.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
As assigned by Business Office Manager
Participate in USPI EDGE program
Probable assignment of EDGE requirement ownership, daily entering of data.
Acts as the back-up surgery scheduler
May operate as the team lead as designated by the Business Office Manager.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, QUALIFICATION and EDUCATIONAL AND /OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma or equivalent. Healthcare background preferred. Six months of related experience and/or training. Or Equivalent combination of education and experience. Accounting and math skills. Organization and multi-tasking skills. Computer competency. Reasoning ability. Basic coding knowledge. Attention to detail.
