JOB DESCRIPTION:

  Job Purpose:
Provides medical assistant services to patients 
 
 
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
(Note: Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or changed at the sole discretion of Sycuan Management at any time)
 

  1. Screens patients prior to visit with medical provider
  2. Performs treatments and diagnostic procedures including audiology screens, visual acuity screens, EKGs, and ear cleansing by irrigation
  3. Assists medical providers with exams and minor surgical procedures
  4. Administers and documents parenteral, oral medications, and skin tests as ordered by provider
  5. Cleans minor wounds, changes dressings, and removes sutures with direct supervision
  6. Prepares exam rooms and equipment ensuring exam rooms are clean and neat
  7. Ensures inventory is current and exam rooms are stocked with appropriate supplies and forms
  8. Scans prescriptions to the pharmacy prior to patient’s departure
  9. Completes appropriate areas on patient chart forms, including PCC, Well Child Exam form, CHDP form, and Sycuan patient referral forms
  10. Refers phone calls to appropriate staff members
  11. Files reports in chart that have been approved by providers
  12. Obtains charts requested by medical provider
  13. Evaluates patient’s immunization status and administers vaccinations according to accepted schedules, standing orders, and per medical provider’s approval
  14. Monitors vaccine supply for appropriate refrigeration and freezer temperatures and immediately notifies supervisor of temperatures out of range
  15. Registers immunizations in San Diego’s immunization registry database
  16. Obtains, prepares, stores, and forwards specimens to servicing laboratory in absence of lab tech to include: finger stick hemoglobin, blood glucose, hemoglobin A1C determinations, cholesterol levels, urine pregnancy test, rapid strap test, urine dipstick, urine mitral, and collects capillary lead specimens
  17. Informs medical providers of observed patient behavior that may affect patient’s illness or treatment
  18. Provides patient comfort and brings patient issues to the attention of the Clinical Operation Manager
  19. Ensures sharps containers are changed as necessary
  20. Monitors eye wash stations daily
  21. Ensures standards for infection control are met in accordance with local, state and federal OSHA regulations
  22. Assists with required reports as needed
  23. Participates in health conferences
  24. Attends all full staff and departmental meetings
  25. Maintains continuing education requirements for MA recertification

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience:
Essential:
 

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant certification
  • Medical Assistant Experience
  • Current CPR certification

 
 
Desirable:
 
 

  • Tribal clinic experience
  • Experience in a Primary Care environment
  • State Certified Medical Assistant

Skills and Knowledge:
Essential:
 

  • Excellent knowledge of laws and regulations governing medical records and medical office protocols
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with patients and medical personnel
  • Ability to complete forms and documents
  • Ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Excellent knowledge of English both written and oral
  • Ability to appear for work on time
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and composure
  • Ability to accept constructive criticism
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Working knowledge of Electronic Health Records
  • Ability to walk and stand for 8 hours at a time
  • Ability to perform repetitive bending, reaching, pulling and pushing
  • Ability to assist with the transfer of patient from wheelchair to examination table
