Public Relations




Reporting to the Assistant Director of News and Communications, the Communications Manager is editor of the weekly electronic newsletter Spelman Connection and will manage the production and distribution of the digital publication. Other responsibilities include support for media relations research, campaigns and initiatives. The position provides editorial and strategic direction for internal communications directed to campus constituents on behalf of the Office of Communications. The individual will exercise independent decision-making, judgement and autonomy as it relates to content development and brand management via the Spelman Connection, internal communications and media relations responsibilities, as well as integrated communications initiatives executed by the Office of Communications.  




Conduct interviews and reporting to write and edit news stories, coordinate graphics and layout for the Spelman Connection (an electronic newsletter), and disseminate the newsletter via e-mail weekly;

Develop various supporting materials for media relations and communication activities, including research for reports, analytic evaluations and integrated communications plans;

Develop communications materials, including but not limited to press releases for trade and consumer media, bios, fact sheets and clip compilation;

Prepare College spokesperson(s) with Q&As, facts or supporting materials to use when delivering messages to key constituencies and news media, as needed; 

Staff interviews with media representatives to manage and monitor conversations between the media and Spelman College employees and students to ensure an accurate and appropriate representation of Spelman in the media;

Staff on-campus commercial and non-profit film and photography shoots to manage and monitor on campus and external filming and photography sessions with Spelman College students and employees to ensure an accurate and appropriate representation of Spelman College in productions;

Manage and coordinate completion of Spelman College information for guides, handbooks and directories;

Manage, provide strategic direction, create and coordinate AXIS TV/flat screen posts, voicemail messages and email blasts;

As a member of the Campus Marketing Group, collaborate with Marketing Manager on developing and implementing strategies and tactics for internal communication projects, as assigned;

Create and implement other PR/communications projects as assigned.




Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations, English or similar field plus a minimum of five years of job related experience and knowledge of Associated Press style are required.


This position requires a confident communicator and presenter with outstanding writing, editing, proofreading and research skills; excellent organizational and planning skills; superior project management and time management skills; an individual self-motivated with a positive and professional approach to management; strong experience in successfully managing multiple projects at the same time in a busy office environment; and ability to speak effectively before groups of employees, students, alumnae, other College constituents and the public.


Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in a team environment are essential, as the position will interact with many departments and divisions, including administrative and faculty-led groups. Incumbent should be able to collaborate well to formulate plans and objectives in accordance with overall college goals.  


The individual must possess solid analytical and problem solving skills and have the ability to organize and prioritize goals. The position requires that the individual have a track record of identifying and implementing process improvements.


The incumbent must have the ability to read and interpret documents and possess excellent writing skills with the ability to write articles for publications, routine reports and correspondence.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform advanced level skills using Microsoft Word, as well as email marketing and media relations tools/vehicles, e.g. Cision and iContact. Working knowledge of Photoshop is preferred.
