Duration of your adventure – Spring peak season with an opportunity of year round

Attire while on adventure- The Society has a very conservative grooming policy. Tattoos may not be visible or must be appropriately covered while on duty. Jewelry may be worn if it does not detract from a well-groomed look or create a safety hazard. No facial or tongue piercing.


Amenities - Located at the San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park, this adventure offers ZOO Perks which include discounts on food/premium products, free and discounted admission to local attractions, and accrual of vacation and sick time (exception for some grants and Summer Fellowships).

(Union positions)  Hourly payrate:  $11.50 - $12.20

 

Requirements for this adventure include:

The San Diego Zoo's Retail Department is seeking friendly, cooperative, motivated and outgoing employees. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have excellent guest service skills. Must be able to work a very flexible schedule to include weekdays, weekends (Saturday AND Sunday) and holidays and evening shifts. Desirable qualifications include prior work experience in a high volume, fast paced Food Service or Retail environment, ability to operate a cash register accurately/efficiently. Must have good mathematical skills and cash handling experience. This position requires standing for extended periods of time. Periodic heavy lifting up to 40 pounds and cleaning and maintaining all areas and equipment. Scheduled work hours will vary, approximately 15-30 hours per week. These positions are for spring break with opportunities for year-round employment. (Posted 1/9/2018) (Extended 2/7/18)

PRIMARY PURPOSE

The Food Service Clerk performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects San Diego Zoo Global’s mission and vision of saving species worldwide by uniting our expertise in animal care and conservation science with our dedication to inspiring passion for nature and leading the fight against extinction. The Food Service Clerk under supervision, prepares, serves and sells food items.  This position reports to the Food Stand Lead, Supervisor and Manager.
 
A Food Service Clerk is assigned and responsible for one or more areas of food preparation, service, sales and maintenance.  This class is distinguished from positions in the Merchandise Sales Clerk class in that the former provides food and beverages to guests in restaurants as opposed to merchandise items sold in gift shops.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Prepares and sells food items
  • Assists with daily preparation of food items as needed
  • Assists with the daily set-up and closure of assigned location
  • Operates food service equipment and machines safely
  • Assists with maintaining a safe and sanitary work area
  • Keeps all necessary food items and supplies stocked
  • Practices safe food handling procedures
  • Follows cash handling protocol and procedures
  • Operates a cash register and handles cash accurately
