Destination - SECURITY DEPARTMENT - SAN DIEGO ZOO SAFARI PARK, Escondido, CA

Attire - 
The Society has a very conservative grooming policy. Tattoos may not be visible or must be appropriately covered while on duty.  Jewelry may be worn if it does not detract from a well-groomed look or create a safety hazard. No facial or tongue piercing.

Amenities  - Located 30 miles North of the San Diego Zoo and just south of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in the San Pasqual Valley in Escondido, California, this adventure offers ZOO Perks which include discounts on food/premium products, free and discounted admission to local attractions, and accrual of vacation and sick time (exception for some grants and Summer Fellowships).  The San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research is the largest zoo-based multi-disciplinary research effort in the world. Based at the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center for Conservation Research adjacent to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, more than 200 dedicated scientists carry out research vital to the conservation of animals, plants, and habitats, locally and internationally.  

 

(Non Union Position) - Hourly wage is commensurate with experience.       

JOB REQUIREMENTS                   
Applicants must be flexible to work any day or swing/graveyard shifts and be available to work any of the seven days of the week.

The Security Officer provides for the safety of visitors, employees, and animals, and protects Society property. Applicants must have excellent interpersonal, oral/written communication and report writing skills. Ability to use security-related equipment is necessary. Computer skills are necessary.

Physical working conditions for these positions includes lifting and the ability to move heavy materials, prolonged walking/ standing and exposure to outdoor elements such as darkness, rain/heat/wind and native animal species,occasional strenuous hiking on uneven terrain as well as have the ability to monitor sounds and two-way radio traffic.Uniforms and duty belts are required year round, 24 hours a day. The successful applicant will be required to complete a written report, pass a pre-employment physical and drug test, as well as pass a background check.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must have valid guard card.
  • Must have a valid pepper spray permit (must obtain within 30 days of hire)
  • Must complete the approved first aid/CPR course within 2 weeks of hire.
  • Must have a valid California driver license.

One of the essential functions of this position is the ability to drive a SDZ Global vehicle.  If you are offered employment in this position, you will be asked to authorize SDZ Global to access your current driving report through the DMV’s Employer Pull Notice Program.  Your hiring for this position will be contingent on SDZ Global receiving an acceptable driving report from you.  In addition, your continued employment in the position will depend on you maintaining an acceptable driving record.  You may obtain a list of conditions that disqualify a person from driving an SDZ Global vehicle from a Human Resources Representative.

Job Requirements:

PRIMARY PURPOSE

The Security Officer performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects San Diego Zoo Global's mission and vision of connecting people to wildlife and conservation and pursues green/conservation practices when feasible. The Security Officer provides for the safety of visitors, employees, and animals, and protects the property of San Diego Zoo Global. This position reports to the Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Assists visitors and provides a variety of information
• Responds to visitor complaints
• Assists with lost children
• Provides security during movement of animals
• Locks and unlocks doors and gates as appropriate
• Escorts staff transporting money
• Secures vault
• Responds to medical needs and a variety of other emergencies according to procedures
• Transports visitors, staff, and material to various locations
• Assists in training as needed
• Maintains assigned weapons, equipment, and vehicles
• Responds to animal escapes according to procedures
• Transports, logs, and returns lost and found items
• Provides dispatching assistance
• Tests alarms
• Monitors radio communication
• Cuts and distributes keys as appropriate
• Repairs, removes, and installs locks as assigned
• Provides routine office assistance as assigned
• Submits incident reports and other documentation as required
• Maintains a variety of contacts in order to respond to inquiries and requests and to effectively coordinate activities
• Distributes pay checks as assigned
• Checks security of animal enclosures, buildings, facilities, and gates, verifies proper identification

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES  

• Monitors safety of visitors, employees, and animals by checking for safety hazards    while patrolling grounds, parking lots, and gift shops
• Escort visitors
• Programs electronic lock and key systems, cashes checks according to procedures
• Participates in the apprehension/arrest of burglars, vandals, trespassers, and other unauthorized persons

ANCILLARY FUNCTIONS

Makes public address announcements; monitors solicitors according to procedures; performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

The classification requires possession of Powers to Arrest Card, valid permit to carry Pepper Spray, First Aid Card, valid California driver license, and CPR card.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work outdoors in varying weather conditions; work varying shifts.  
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position has been identified as one requiring at least occasional lifting in excess of 50 pounds; move heavy materials.
