LOCATION - Guest Experiences/San Diego Zoo Safari Park

Duration TEMPORARY Without Benefits (lasting 6-8 weeks)

Attire The Society has a very conservative grooming policy. Tattoos may not be visible or must be appropriately covered while on duty. Jewelry may be worn if it does not detract from a well-groomed look or create a safety hazard. No facial or tongue piercing.

Amenities - Located 30 minutes north of the San Diego Zoo in San Pasqual Valley near Escondido, California, this adventure offers ZOO Perks which include discounts on food/premium products, free and discounted admission to local attractions, and accrual of vacation and sick time (exception for some grants). 

Requirements include:

We are looking for dynamic individuals who can provide our guests with an exceptional customer service experience. Requirements include a positive attitude, ability to take initiative, be a team player and have the ability to communicate effectively with guests and co-workers and an eagerness to put your passion for wildlife to work.

For these positions, applicants MUST be able to perform multiple duties at the same time and be flexible enough to deal with guests in a tactful, courteous manner. MUST be able to communicate effectively with others.

Hours scheduled per week will be approximately 12-25 hours. Work schedule will vary depending on operational needs. The Guest Ambassador performs a variety of duties with a main focus of providing assistance to Safari Park visitors and employees.

Responsibilities include operating turnstiles as assigned, taking tickets, checking member identification, keeping order at turnstiles and other attractions, greeting visitors, crowd control at various locations, operation of carousel, ability to physically complete and monitor a ropes challenge course, provide directions and other general information.

Additional requirements include the ability to stand for long periods; walking up to two miles in a shift ; ability to maintain crowd control traffic flow in the parking lot.

A valid California driver license is preferred. The Guest Ambassador performs a variety of duties with a main focus of providing assistance to Safari Park visitors and employees.

Job Requirements:


The Guest Ambassador performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects San Diego Zoo Global’s mission and vision of connecting people to wildlife, conservation and pursues green/conservation practices when feasible. The Guest Ambassador is committed to the department mission and vision of providing the finest customer service to each guest who enters the San Diego Zoo Safari Park by actively engaging in meaningful guest encounters.  The Guest Ambassador performs a variety of duties providing assistance to organization visitors.This position reports to the Guest Ambassador Lead, Supervisor or Manager.


  • Operates turnstiles as assigned
  • Stocks turnstiles prior to opening gates
  • Takes tickets and checks member identification
  • Hands out promotional material to visitors
  • Keeps order at turnstiles and gates
  • Responds to visitors inquiriesand complaints as appropriate
  • Greets visitors and provides directions and other general information
  • Maintains proper count of visitors at various locations throughout the Zoo
  • Maintains crowd control
  • Records closing counts
  • Places directional and informational signs in specified locations
  • Assist as a directional parking attendant in public parking areas
  • Maintain radio contact
  • Operates and takes tickets at the Carousel
  • Assists with special events and specialty transports
  • Takes/checks tickets in various locations
  • Acts as an usher at various shows
  • Adheres to all SDZ Global and department policies and practices
  • Practices the GRRREAT Customer Service Standards


  • Reports emergencies, hazards, problems, incidents, or suspicious activity to medical, security, or appropriate staff
  • Refers visitors and members to other staff if discrepancies in tickets or identification
  • Records various categories of admissions and conducts periodic count readings using point-of-sales automated systems
  • Allows entry and exit of vehicles, staff and contractors through a secure gate
  • Maintains crowd control at construction sites, animal shows, emergencies, and other locationsEscorts visitors which includes those in wheelchairs and with guide dogs
  • Maneuver a cart safely through crowds
  • Sets up portable sound systems
  • Prepares reports as assigned

Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.


Examples of representative qualifications include the ability to perform the essential job functions, the representative duties and greet visitors and maintain crowd control; valid California driver license may be required in some assignments.

Work outdoors; exposure to varying weather conditions, dust, and allergens; work in temperatures above 100 degrees in the summer months at the Safari Park.


Move heavy materials and lift up to 40 pounds; stand for long periods of time; operates a variety of motor vehicles when assigned; walk up to two miles a day to move between shift areas; move up and down stairs regularly; climb a 25 foot ladder; assist a child with boarding and off-boarding a carousel animal that may be up to five feet off of the ground.
