These positions report to the Operations Department and are responsible for the operating the 4D theaters.  Cleans and maintains work areas: register station, assigned theater locations, theater seats, sweeping floors, washing glasses, and maintaining viewing screens.  Completes transactions with accuracy and efficiency.  Maintains a positive work environment.  Assists guest with mobility challenges and helping with listening devices (closed caption and headphones).  Load in and exit guests from the theater.  Theater operations and minimal trouble shooting.

PRIMARY PURPOSE

The Merchandise Sales Clerk performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects San Diego Zoo Global’s mission and vision of saving species worldwide by uniting our expertise in animal care and conservation science with our dedication to inspiring passion for nature and leading the fight against extinction.  The Merchandise Sales Clerk under supervision sells merchandise items. This position reports to a Manager.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Sells merchandise items
  • Explains related history of merchandise
  • Demonstrates operation of appropriate merchandise
  • Cleans and maintains sales displays and sales area
  • Keeps sales items in stock and on display
  • Orders above items as necessary and maintains an inventory
  • Keeps prices clearly posted and updated
  • Assists merchandise buyer
  • Registers sales
  • Makes change
  • Opens and closes registers
  • Rents and maintains strollers and wheelchairs
  • Provides information to the public or directs to a knowledgeable source
  • Adheres to all SDZ Global and department policies and practices
  • Practices the GRRREAT Customer Service Standards

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

  • Responsible for one or more areas of merchandising, sales and some rental items
  • Cleans and maintains sales displays and sales area
  • Maintains merchandise stocks
  • Opens and closes registers at the start and end of each business day
  • Completes transactions with accuracy and efficiency
  • Assembles, packs and transport               
  • Stocking and displaying of merchandise
  • Participate in department promotions and systems for up selling
  • Maintains a positive working environment
  • Monitor store security,
  • Distinguish merchandise and prices

QUALIFICATIONS

Training and/or experience that would demonstrate the essential functions, knowledge and skills listed.
 
Knowledge of:

  • Background/history/operations of merchandising
  • Zoo and Safari Park rules and regulations

Skills To:

  • Operate a cash register accurately and efficiently
  • Understand and carry out instructions
  • Understand and communicate effectively with the public
  • Foresee needs and maintain stocks before depleted

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work in a variety of indoor and outdoor locations; work in varying weather conditions and excessive heat; exposure to allergens; move about in work area; work in confined or cramped spaces.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Use a ladder, move and lift moderate to heavy objects up to 50 pounds; prolonged standing, bending, stooping and reaching.

ALL EMPLOYMENT IS CONTINGENT UPON PASSING A DRUG SCREEN.
SOME EMPLOYMENT IS CONTINGENT UPON PASSING PRE-PLACEMENT TESTING.

 
 
REQUIREMENTS:

Under supervision, sells merchandise items; maintains cleanliness of sales items and sales area; maintains merchandise stocks; and performs related work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:

A Merchandise Sales Clerk is responsible for one or more areas of merchandising, sales and some rental items. This class is distinguished from the Food Service Clerk class in that the latter handles food service and related items as opposed to only merchandise items. A Merchandise Sales Clerk is distinguished from the Information Attendant class in that the primary responsibility of the former is not information disbursement.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Ability to move about in work area, work in elevated positions, move moderate to heavy objects, and work in confined or cramped spaces; ability to operate a cash register; exposure to possible burns from T-Shirt transfer irons; and ability to monitor store security, handle money, and distinguish merchandise and prices.
