Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have excellent customer service experience.  Quick service restaurant/food service or retail experience is essential. Seeking friendly, cooperative, motivated and outgoing employees to work in a high volume, fast-paced Food Service Department.  Candidates must be available to work any of the seven days of the week, including nights, weekends, and holidays.  Work schedule will vary depending on operational needs.  Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and able to take directions effectively. Must have good mathematical skills and cash register/handling experience.   This position requires standing for extended periods of time, periodic heavy lifting up to 40 pounds and cleaning and maintaining food service areas and equipment. These are seasonal positions through September with opportunities for year-round employment.  (exte ( (

The Food Service Clerk performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects San Diego Zoo Global’s mission and vision of connecting people to wildlife and conservation, and pursues green/conservation practices when feasible. The Food Service Clerk under supervision, prepares, serves and sells food items.  This position reports to the Food Stand Lead, Supervisor and Manager.
A Food Service Clerk is assigned and responsible for one or more areas of food preparation, service, sales and maintenance.  This class is distinguished from positions in the Merchandise Sales Clerk class in that the former provides food and beverages to guests in restaurants as opposed to merchandise items sold in gift shops.
  • Prepares and sells food items
  • Assists with daily preparation of food items as needed
  • Assists with the daily set-up and closure of assigned location
  • Operates food service equipment and machines safely
  • Assists with maintaining a safe and sanitary work area
  • Keeps all necessary food items and supplies stocked
  • Practices safe food handling procedures
  • Follows cash handling protocol and procedures
  • Operates a cash register and handles cash accurately
  • Make Customer Service a top priority
  • Provides information to guestsor directs to a knowledgeable source
  • Professionally handle difficult situations with employees or guests
  • Good work ethics and meets Organization performance standards
  • Assists new personnel as needed
  • Assists Lead, Cooks, Manager and Supervisor as needed
  • Compliance with the Organization’s and Health Departments uniform standards
  • Maintains a passing grade on the Environmental Health Department tests
  • Adheres to Organization and Departments safety guidelines
  • Practices the GRRREAT Customer Service Standards



  • Serves food and beverage items to our guests
  • Operates cash register efficiently and accurately
  • Meets or exceeds established cash handling standards
  • Safe operation of food service equipment and machines
  • Helps to create a friendly, cohesive and productive work environment
  • Cleans floors, work surfaces, employee restrooms, equipment and all areas in their assigned location
  • Adheres to sanitation and safety practices
  • Understands and follows procedures for inventory control, stock rotation and waste control
  • Assists with cycle and period end inventory as needed
  • Assists with training of new personnel as needed
  • Understands and follows both written and verbal directions effectively and efficiently
  • Assists with period end inventory as needed
  • Communicates with management staff on a daily basis
  • Assists guests in a courteous, friendly and professional manner
  • Adheres to the Environmental Health Department standards
  • Maintains inventory and stock rotation
  • Stocks and organizes all food and supply items
  • Adheres to cash handling procedures and operates the cash register accurately
  • Supports peers and Lead Food Server as needed


Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.


Education, training and/or experience which would clearly demonstrate the essential functions, knowledge and skills listed.
Knowledge of:

  • Methods, materials and equipment used in food service
  • Food presentation and portion control of food items served in their location
  • Basic inventory controls and best practices
  • Basic usage and care of standard kitchen equipment and utensils
  • Safety rules and regulations
  • Guest service standards and policies and uniform standards
  • Reports issues that could affect food production, quality or service.

Exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions found where food is being cooked in quantity for long periods of time; may have exposure to varying weather conditions and slippery surfaces. 

Frequently required to move moderate to heavy objects up to 40 pounds; standing for long periods of time, bending, reaching and twisting.


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: General Knowledge of: - Methods, materials and equipment used in food service. - Zoo facilities, rules and regulations. - Principles of public relations.
