The Interpretive Specialist performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects the San Diego Zoo Global’s mission and vision of connecting people to wildlife and conservation and pursues green/conservation practices when feasible. The Interpretive Specialist works with the Interpretive Manager and a variety of organizational interpretive teams to help create and develop interpretive plans for the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park. This includes interpretive plans for exhibits, promotions, graphics, training materials, and curriculum.

Following the direction provided by the Interpretation Manager, the Interpretive Specialist will:
  • Develop messaging for all interpretive areas from new exhibits to training materials
  • Work with interpretive team to create storylines for new exhibits
  • Lead the development of exhibit illustrations
  • Participate in the design process for interpretive packages
  • Assist with the generation and implementation of interpretive evaluation plans
  • Lead the creation of new interpretive volunteer training materials
  • Convert existing interpretive volunteer training materials to an on-line delivery format
  • Lead the creation of new curriculum material for teachers
  • Write and edit interpretive panels
  • Select photos for storyline and illustration reference
  • Direct artists in the design of curriculum
  • Work with artists on panel design and layout
Ability to gather data, listen and integrate various points of view, analyze information accurately, manage projects, meet deadlines, and perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

One essential function for this position is the ability to drive a SDZ Global vehicle.  If you are offered employment, you will be asked to authorize SDZ Global to access your current driving report through the DMV’s Employer Pull Notice Program.  Your hiring for this position will be contingent on SDZ Global receiving an acceptable driving report for you.  In addition, your continued employment in the position will depend on you maintaining an acceptable driving report from you.  You may obtain a list of conditions that disqualify a person from driving an SDZ Global vehicle from a Human Resources Representative 

Job Requirements:


A Bachelor's degree in biology, sciences, education, museum studies, interpretation, instructional design, communications, or a related field or equivalent specialized training; animal knowledge and a Masters Degree is desirable. Considerable experience in interpretation is necessary (an example would be 10 years).

The physical demands are those of a typical office environment—moderate walking and standing and the ability to sit for long periods of time. 

               All employment is contingent upon passing a drug screen.
