Job requirements:
The Associate Director - Library Services develops and implements Society long-range and short-term library system plans, including an intranet resource to provide online access to a computerized catalog, databases, specialized resources, and outside web sites. 

Applicants must have a master’s degree in library science from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience. Desirable qualifications for this position include a Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline, knowledge of zoology, taxonomy, life sciences, medicine, conservation, and or ecology as well as a broad grasp of library functions and operations. 

Essential job functions of this position include evaluating, selecting, and overseeing the computerized library system, maintaining the SDZ Global archives, developing, administering, and monitoring assigned budgets. Must be able to communicate effectively, both oral and written. Applicant must be able to move light to moderately heavy materials approximately 25 – 35 pounds. Must be available for a minimum of 40hrs/wk.

Job Requirements:

PRIMARY PURPOSE

The Associate Director-Library Services performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects San Diego Zoo Global’s mission and vision of connecting people to wildlife and conservation, and pursues green/conservation practices when feasible. The Associate Director – Library Services is responsible for the Organization’s library operations and for developing information resources that support the organization's information needs. This position reports to Chief Life Sciences Officer.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Evaluates, selects, and oversees computerized library system
  • Develops related policies, procedures, systems, and records
  • Maintains the SDZ Global archives
  • Develops, administers, and monitors assigned budgets
  • Identifies and authorizes purchase of equipment and supplies
  • Works with vendors regarding purchases and negotiates prices
  • Oversees related service contracts
  • Provides user training
  • Maintains a variety of contacts in order to respond to inquiries and requests
  • Effectively coordinate activities

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES 

  • Develops and implements Society long-range and short-term library system plans, including an intranet resource to provide online access to a computerized catalog, databases, specialized resources, and outside web sites
  • Manages staff in researching, acquiring, organizing, and maintaining various information resources including special reference materials, bibliographies, reports, files, databases, books, journals, videos, online consortia, and other formats
  • Develops networking arrangements with other libraries to expand and supplement resources
  • Submits grant requests for related funding 

ANCILLARY FUNCTIONS

Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Examples of representative qualifications include a Master's degree in library science or a related field or equivalent specialized training or experience in a specialized library.

Knowledge of:

  • The internet, online databases, and automated library systems
  • Information networks and consortia
  • Zoology, taxonomy, life sciences, medicine, conservation, and/or ecology

Ability to:

  • Use automated library equipment and systems
  • Develop library information services for specific institutional needs
  • Manage staff
  • Work with teams and effectively with others
  • Communicate effectively (oral and written)
