BUILDING INSPECTOR

Description:

Position Summary

Serves as the Pueblo of Sandia’s Building Inspector on all construction projects to ensure that new construction, alterations, or repairs comply with local and national building codes and ordinances, zoning regulations, and contract specifications.

Supervision Exercised

Supervised by the Director of Building Safety

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Enforce the provisions of building codes and have the authority to render interpretations of the codes.

  2. Receive applications, review plan documents and issue permits for construction and alteration, demolition and moving of buildings and structures.

  3. Conduct inspections of the premises for which permits have been issued and enforce compliance with the provisions of the codes.

  4. Perform all required inspections and have the authority to accept reports of inspection by approved agencies or individuals.

  5. Secure such expert opinion as deemed necessary to report upon unusual technical issues that arise.

  6. Keep official records of applications received, permits and certificates issued, fees collected, reports of inspections, and notices and orders issued. 

  7. Inspect project for compliance with approved plans and specifications.

  8. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses and buildings.

  2. Knowledge of building codes.

  3. Knowledge of word processing such as Microsoft Office, spreadsheet applications and the ability to learn similar applications such as Microsoft Project.

  4. Ability to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

  5. Ability to communicate, understand and carry out written or oral instructions.

  6. Excellent presentation skills.

  7. Ability to deal effectively with contractors, staff, and the general public.

  8. Ability to work efficiently and accurately in an atmosphere of frequent interruptions.

  9. Ability to work odd and unusual hours.  Weekends and overtime may be required.

  10. Ability to use a word processor, computer terminal and standard office equipment.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications, Education and Experience

Required:

  1. High School Diploma, GED Certification or equivalent.

  2. Minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a contractor, engineer, architect, or as a superintendent.

  3. The following license and/or certification is required prior to employment start date: ICC-B2 Commercial Building Inspector’s Certification.

  4. Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted New Mexico Driver’s License.

Licensing Status

  1. Must be able to successfully pass a stringent background investigation.

  2. Will require a post-offer, pre-employment and random drug screening.
