COMPENSATION MANAGER

Description:

Position Summary

Under direct supervision of the Human Resources Director, supervises, administers and coordinates the compensation functions for all business entities.  Has primary responsibility for assisting enterprise directors/managers in people planning.  Provides expert resource backup for managers during department reviews and/or reorganization proposals.   Administers the merit increase portion of the Performance Appraisal program.  Responsible for monitoring and recommending wage increases as a result of local market data. 

As a member of the management team, directly supports the strategic planning and budgeting processes for HR.  Responsible for developing and coaching direct reports.

Supervision Exercised

Reports to the Human Resources Director.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Develops detailed job descriptions which are correctly aligned with the duties and responsibilities of the position.  Uses local and national wage data and internal equity standards to assist in determining appropriate salary grade level for each position developed.
  2. Researches and analyzes competitive compensation practices in the job market; contributes to established compensation surveys and/or develops and implements custom surveys as appropriate.  Makes recommendations for job specific salary adjustments.
  3. Maintains and updates position codes, job codes and compensation in HRIS system and the job descriptions on specified drives.
  4. Monitors expenditures vs. budget and prepares transfer requests to assist the HR Director.
  5. Works with Directors and Managers to develop succession planning for departments.
  6. Administers the annual increases determined and approved by the Tribal Council.
  7. In conjunction with the annual increases, determines the need to adjust current salary ranges to ensure competitiveness in the local market.
  8. Works with the Training Manager to coordinate the training of the Performance Appraisal process.
  9. Routinely conduct desk audit process to ensure position descriptions are in alignment with actual duties and responsibilities performed.
  10. Will perform special project requests and other duties as assigned.

  1. Ability to supervise, coordinate, direct and assign work.
  2. Ability to analyze and develop time lines, project resources, monitor and evaluate results.
  3. Ability to work effectively with senior management, employees and the general public.
  4. Ability to draft complex reports and materials and give lengthy oral and written presentations to appropriate management personnel.
  5. Must have strong general knowledge of Human Resource functions.
  6. Proven experience in the development of position descriptions as well as the development and administration of salary ranges. 

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications, Education and Experience

Required:

  1. High School Diploma, GED certification or equivalent
  2. Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, Business Administration or related field of study and four (4) years directly related experience in Compensation Management, Human Resources Management and/or administration.  Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
  3. Must be familiar with all Federal, State and local laws relating to position development, scoping criteria and wage range development.
  4. Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted New Mexico Driver’s License.

Licensing Status

  1. Must be able to successfully pass a stringent background investigation.
  2. Will require a post-offer, pre-employment and random drug screening

Working Conditions

  1. Work is normally performed indoors.
  2. No or very limited physical effort required.
  3. No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
