2nd Assistant Golf Superintendent

Job Description

  • Under direction of the Assistant Superintendent, leads a crew of greenskeepers in the daily maintenance of greens, fairways and surrounding grounds of assigned golf course.
  • Leads maintenance crew in performing chemical and fertilizer applications, equipment operations, irrigation system maintenance, mowing, hand watering and course set-up.
  • Coordinates daily assignments in conjunction with the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent.
  • Ensures that all crewmembers are fully trained; instructs in proper equipment use and work methods to ensure safety standards are met.
  • Oversees the completion of work assignments by crewmembers and assists with field decisions regarding job procedures, work standards, and machinery use.
  • Supervises special projects and labor crews.
  • Inspects assigned areas of the golf course to ensure that conditioning standards are being met.
  • Assists in the planning of all maintenance and project work.
  • Reports golf course conditions and all disciplinary problems to the golf course superintendent or assistant golf course superintendent.
  • Opens the maintenance shop and runs operations in the absence of the golf course superintendent and assistant golf course superintendent.
  • Assists with snow removal during off-season.

Job Requirements

  • Turf certificate or associate’s degree in turf management, agronomy or related field preferred.
  • 2-3 years greenskeeping experience or recent graduate of a turfgrass management program (certificate or degree).
  • Working knowledge of golf course construction principles, practices and methods, and a thorough understanding of the rules and strategies of the game of golf.
  • Knowledge of current federal, state and local laws and regulations affecting the management of golf course operations.
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a state pesticide license within 3 months of employment.
  • Valid New York State driver’s license (or ability to obtain one upon establishing residency).


Position Physical Requirements:


  • Repetitive motion of hands, wrists and fingers for constant pushing, pulling, fingering and grasping in the use of tools and equipment.
  • Must be able to frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and reach.
  • Must have close visual acuity in order to inspect, operate and repair equipment.
  • Must be able to work outdoors under conditions ranging from extreme hot to extreme cold.
  • Subject to noise and electrical, mechanical, chemical and explosive hazards.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 75 lbs and frequently up to 50 lbs using proper lifting techniques.
