Attorney - Legal

Job Description


Attorney will provide advice and counsel to the Oneida Indian Nation and its businesses, including Turning Stone Resort Casino, Yellow Brick Road Casino, Point Place Casino, and SavOn and Maple Leaf Market Convenience stores concerning intellectual property, software licensing, government contracting, and general business transactions.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work as part of a collaborative, professional team focused on delivering high-level legal advice efficiently, effectively and on-time.
  • Serve as a trusted legal advisor to the Deputy General Counsel, General Counsel, other members of senior and executive management, and other key positions.
  • Proactively identify legal risk to the Nation and offer creative and effective solutions to mitigate such risks and to protect the organization from legal exposure, liability, and financial loss.
  • Rely on experience and judgment to provide sound and practical legal advice on issues consistent with the governmental, strategic and operational objectives of the Nation.
  • Manage and advise the Nation relating to intellectual property matters, including providing internal advice, and managing license agreements and trademark portfolio.
  • Perform government contracting compliance and contract reviews.
  • Draft, analyze and negotiate non-intellectual property business and vendor agreements.

Job Requirements

  • At least three plus (3+) years of intellectual property and transactional experience from a top 50 nationally ranked law firm.  Government contracting experience in addition preferred.
  • Juris Doctorate (JD) from top 50 ABA accredited law school preferred.
  • Licensed to practice law and in good standing without any instances of suspension, revocation, censure or other adverse events.
  • Significant legal experience advising sophisticated clients.
  • Exceptional ability to identify legal issues, negotiate documents, and maintain presence under pressure, along with excellent judgment and decision making skills.
  • Organized self-starter with strong work ethic and a "can do" attitude; a quick study with ability to manage deadlines.
  • High moral and ethical standards that reflect honesty, integrity and reliability.
  • Detail oriented and deadline-driven.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills; ability to understand and convey complex legal principles in readily understandable terms.
  • Experience preparing/reviewing/revising agreements, legal memos, filings, and other documents.
  • Proficiency in conducting legal research using LEXIS/ NEXIS, Westlaw, or other online research tools.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented collaborative manner.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Repetitive motion of the hands, wrists and fingers for the continuous and frequent use of the computer, telephone, copiers, fax machine and other office equipment.
  • Must have close visual acuity for the purpose of viewing computer monitor, extensive reading, preparing documents and/or analyzing data.
  • Must have acute speech and hearing for frequent and extensive inter-personal oral communications both in person and over the phone.
  • This position is predominantly sedentary in nature requiring the ability to sit for long periods of time, to occasionally exert up to 10 lbs of force and frequently a negligible amount of force in order to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects in the performance of duties and responsibilities.
  • No substantial exposure to adverse environmental conditions (indoor office setting).
