Job Title:   Corporate Counsel Employee Benefits and Employment

The Corporate Counsel – Employee Benefits and Employment Law will provide advice and counsel on ERISA governed benefit plans and other employee benefit matters, as well as advice and counsel on federal, state and local employment matters on behalf of Munich Reinsurance America, Inc. and its affiliates.  
  • Provide counsel and advice to Human Resources on employee benefits and employment issues
  • Provide and coordinate counseling for employment based issues and decisions
  • Act as key contact for legal issues related to employee benefits matters
  • Proactively mitigate legal risks related to employee benefits and employment based decisions
  • Develop and provide recommendations for continuous improvement of benefits plans and practices
  • Under guidance of Assistant General Counsel, facilitate termination decisions, participate and counsel on reductions in force, respond to agency charges, manage benefits and employment based litigation
  • Assist in the development of employment based policies
  • Engage outside counsel as necessary
  • Partner with Human Resources to prepare written responses to EEOC and state deferral agency charges
Perform any other duties as assigned  

  • New Jersey bar license or ability to register as NJ In-House Counsel
  • Ability to professionally and confidentially participate in legal actions of a sensitive and complex nature
  • Accomplished attorney with an accessible and enthusiastic style and strong business orientation
  • Extensive knowledge and expertise in employee benefits and employment law
  • Ability to self-start and lead projects with minimal supervision in a matrix environment
  • Ability to interface with senior management
  • Must be flexible to work varying schedules and hours as needed
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Proficient in legal research using Lexis and Westlaw and legal writing 

Education and Experience:

  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school, with proven academic success
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of relevant experience with a multistate corporation or law firm independently handling ERISA, executive compensation and other employee benefit matters
  • Experience drafting benefits plans, summary plan descriptions, plan amendments, required notices and other legal documents


  • Experience working with an insurance or other financial services organization.
  • Prefer candidates with a combination of law firm and in-house experience.

Essential Functions:

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products
  • Ability to perform legal research and analysis
  • Manual dexterity in hands to do extensive keyboarding
  • Requires the ability to sit for extended periods of time
  • Requires the ability to review, analyze and interpret complex legal issues
  • Requires the ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing
