Echo Lab Department Description

The Echo Lab at Mount Auburn Hospital offers comprehensive echocardiography services to our patients.  The Echo Lab is a busy department consisting of 3 exam rooms.  In addition, the staff provides coverage for TEEs performed in the Cardiac Cath Lab, coverage for urgent echo hospital-wide, and support of echo imaging during TAVRs in the hybrid CVOR.  Our Echo Lab is fully accredited by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC). 

General Expectations and Duties

  1. Provides competent compassionate care based on scientific principles
  2. Performs echocardiograms competently
  3. Acquires, calculates, and performs preliminary interpretation and comparison to prior exams, then relays the information to the attending physician if results are critical
  4. Utilizes echocardiographic images to guide procedures as needed (percardiocentesis, TAVR, etc)
  5. Performs basic tests on equipment and operates equipment adhering to safety instructions of the manufacturer and hospital policy
  6. Participates in the teaching and training of students in affiliated programs and housestaff
  7. Participates in continuous improvement efforts
  8. Provides patient education as necessary both pre- and post-exam
  9. Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills based on current ultrasound practice by maintaining CEU requirements per the registry
  10. Recognizes changes in patient status and reports to attending physician
  11. Acquires/maintains competency in radiation safety principles when in the Cath Lab or CVOR
  12. Ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment
  13. Good interpersonal and communication skills
  14. Acquires/maintains competency in use of the electronic medical record
  15. Collaborates with various departments to ensure continuity of care
  16. Performs all other duties as assigned



  1. Bachelor’s degree preferred
  2. Current BLS preferred
  3. Hours of Operation:  Echo Lab is open Monday-Saturday dayshifts only (staff is on-call for cardiac emergencies on all off-hours).  Sundays the Lab is closed, but staff is on-call for cardiac emergencies.
  4. Available for flexible dayshifts between the hours of 0700 and 1730 or per department needs (mix of 8, 9, and 10-hour shifts within the Department). 
  5. Available for on-call shifts on rotation as needed
  6. Every 4th weekend on-call required for full-time and part-time staff or per departmental needs
  7. Holidays per rotation
  8. Ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment required
  9. Previous echocardiography experience highly preferred
  10. Current RCS or RDCS, or eligible to take the exam
  11. Basic computer skills required. 
  12. Epic experience preferred
