Sterile Processing Technician

Supplies used by hospital personnel in patient care are processed, i.e., washed, assembled, packaged, and sterilized according to prescribed procedures.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

1. Assists lead instrument technicians in performing and documenting quality control checks including hazardous chemical monitoring, equipment performance, and technician compliance with established policies and procedures.

2. Ensures that all quality control responsibilities carried out by assigned personnel are complete and accurate.

3. Reports all assigned departmental quality control activities to supervisor and lead instrument technicians on a routine basis.

4. Acts as a liaison between Sterile Processing and Operating Room/Day Surgery to address quality control initiatives as assigned by lead technicians or supervisor (may include technician training issues, product changes and equipment problems).

5. Assists lead instrument technicians with documenting training and/or retraining of CSR technicians.

6. Reassembles all Operating Room instrument sets and trays.

7. Assembles case carts for Operating Room and Day Surgery, including instrument kits and disposable products. Utilizes hospital computer system for case cart ordering and charging.

8. Follows all policies and procedures for washing and cleaning instrument sets and trays in decontamination area. Appropriately uses equipment including washers/decontaminators and ultrasonic cleaner.

9. Assembles supplies for sterilization and utilizes autoclave equipment in accordance with sterilization procedures.

10. Receives soiled instruments and equipment from the Operating Room to be processed and transports contaminated equipment to Sterile Processing.

11. Restocks all hospital code carts and Operating Room/Day Surgery exchange carts.

12. Works from requisitions and general instructions to fill orders to the floors, and checks each floor for outdated supplies.

13. Marks supplies with appropriate identification, indicating the date prepared and sterilized, preparer's initials, and product name.

14. Performs special set preparation for Emergency Department, ambulatory departments, Radiology Department, Coronary Care Unit, and Intensive Care Unit, as outlined in special procedures cards at work stations.

15. Accurately charges all supplies through computerized inventory management system.

16. Records and files all reports of biological testing of sterilization equipment.



1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Two years of experience as a CSR technician.

3. Demonstrated interpersonal skills for effective communication with health care professionals.

4. Must have full command of the English language.


1. Physical demands include standing, walking, stooping, bending, and lifting objects for a majority of the workday.

2. Some exposure to infectious hazardous materials.

3. Exposure to high temperatures.

4. Some exposure to carcinogenic gases.
