Archaeological Technician - Kid's Di


Job Description:

In the context of the Kids’ Dig, an Archaeological Technician is expected to work closely with children participating in outdoor daily lab programs. The tech will lead archaeological lab activities, providing guidance and instruction while protecting and recording an 18th century resource, leading artifact discussions, sharing archaeological information with guests of widely varying ages, and overseeing archaeological activities offered each afternoon as part of an open house.  This is a very public-facing position that requires knowledge of historical artifacts from the 17th- 20th centuries as well as excellent inter-personal skills. 


  • Instructs participants in approved excavation techniques and evaluates findings.
  • Leads small group discussions focusing on archaeology, and on the artifacts recovered during excavation. 
  • Assesses artifact conservation priorities.  
  • Collaborates with other staff members to assess and preserve the site’s surviving architectural remains. 
  • Sorts artifacts in preparation for washing and follows laboratory procedures in washing.  Directs program participants in these procedures. 
  • Assists with hands-on archaeological programs in an informal open-house setting.  
  • Interprets archaeology and history of the site and laboratory procedures to visitors.  These interpretations include explanations of activities, description of the site history, items found, and objectives of the excavation.  
  • Maintains an awareness of potential safety concerns for participants including extreme heat.   
  • Performs other related duties as required.


Job Requirements:

Note: Sessions for this position will cover the following dates:

April 2nd - April 27th

  • Applicants should have completed a college-level undergraduate archaeological field school course or have at least three months experience in field or laboratory archaeology.
  • Must be familiar with basics of archaeological field and laboratory work and knowledge of 17th-, 18th- and 19th-century artifacts.  
  • Must demonstrate a basic understanding of archaeological principals.
  • Must have a willingness to interact with the public, and an understanding that this quality is an essential component of the position.  Must have an ability to transport 50lbs. and a willingness to work in extreme weather conditions.
  • Willingness to undergo a background check necessary to work with children.
