Bus Driver


Job Description:

  • Follows established procedures for checking out buses prior to the beginning of the shift.  Receives assigned bus or selects bus, checks bus to ensure it has been properly serviced and cleaned, completes Bus Cleanliness Report, attends morning briefing or is briefed on daily activities by dispatcher.
  • Drives bus over predetermined routes maintaining established time schedule and stopping at fixed check points.  Ensures that safe and proper driving techniques are used. 
  • Answers guests' questions, providing information about bus routes, locations of exhibits, hours of operation, etc.
  • Greets guests and employees at designated bus stops.  Ensures that each passenger holds a valid ticket or has proper employee identification.  Provides assistance to passengers who need help in boarding and leaving the bus.
  • Maintains count of passengers that board the bus each trip and records the total on the Trip Sheet pad.
  • Maintains contact with the dispatcher's office, advising of any problems causing a deviation from the schedule.  Responds to changes in the route relayed by the dispatcher.
  • Plays recorded messages throughout the route, makes special announcements as requested.
  • Checks bus after each trip for lost articles, turning items over to the dispatcher's office or the lost and found.
  • Checks the supply of brochures on the racks located in the bus. Keeps racks filled.
  • Drives special groups as directed.
  • Follows assigned procedures for turning the bus in, including parking the bus in the designated area, securing doors and windows, leaving notes that the bus needs to be refueled, completing the Minor Defects Report, and contacting Security.

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; thorough knowledge of Virginia traffic laws; must be able to exercise good judgment under stress with limited supervision
  • Must have excellent public contact skills, including the ability to deal with people in stressful situations – generally gained through completion of a 10th grade education plus three years bus driving experience within the past ten years. 
  • Must have no history of criminal convictions, other than minor traffic violations; must have  an excellent driving record with no convictions within the past 5 years for driving while intoxicated or impaired, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving, or texting while driving; no convictions within the past 3 years for speeding in excess of 15 mph over the speed limit or any other major moving violation (including, but not limited to failure to obey traffic signs or signals, driving with a suspended or revoked license, careless when not cited as reckless, driving the wrong way on a one-way street, or an at fault accident), or within the past 3 years more than 1 conviction for any minor moving violation (including but not limited to speeding 1-4 mph over the speed limit, failure to yield the right of way, improper passing/lane changing, seatbelt violation, following too closely, improper driving, failure to use turn signal, or improper U-turn).  
  • Must possess a valid Virginia’s Class A or B with a P endorsement to include airbrakes. Must pass a rigid DOT compliant physical examination and obtain a medical card to operate a commercial vehicle from a licensed physician for continued employment and as a Federal Safety Sensitive Position has a level of safety importance requiring alcohol and drug testing. 
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings, nights, and weekends, and split shifts with varying days off; and must report for duty and work in inclement weather. 
  • Must be able to demonstrate dexterity and coordination; must be able to lift 25 pounds; must be able to push a wheelchair and a 200 pound person up an ADA compliant bus ramp.


  • Must have a CDL Class A or B with a P endorsement
  • Familiarity with the Colonial Williamsburg Historic Area and bus routes
  • Completion of a high school education/G.E.D.
