The Senior Manager, Software Engineering will lead a Software Engineering team with responsibility for a $37M line of business and large products/platforms that significantly impact other business units.  Direct reports are often senior level employees with specialized skills to include offshore teams.  Involved in developing, modifying and executing policies that affect multiple business unit groups.  Implements strategic policies when selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.  Works with senior level management to ensure plans are integrated with broader corporate and/or functional strategies, budgets, schedules and plans.  Influences internal leadership on decisions relating to critical priorities and schedules.  Has regular contact with senior/executive level management inside and outside the company; contacts involve clarification or modification of projects, plans, operational decisions, and/or scheduling requirements.
 
Essential Functions/Responsibilities
 
Functional/Organizational Management
 

  • Manages a team of Software Engineers to architect and design enterprise software products/operating systems. 
  • Coaches, trains and mentors direct reports, providing opportunities for employee development. 
  • Has full performance management responsibilities, developing goals and assigning work to staff to ensure that broad and strategic goals and objectives are met. 
  • Delegates assignments to staff.  Staff may be in multiple locations (domestic and/or international). 
  • Collaborates, and develops relationships across the organization. 
  • Responsible for coordinating efforts and meet goals, staffing and schedule requirements across locations. 
  • Partner with Finance; accountable for offshore budgets, staffing, capital expenditures. 
  • Offshore Involvement:  Drive decisions made in offshore groups involving budgets, staffing, and capital expenditures. 
  • Coordinate efforts between groups/functional units.

 

Process & Delivery Management
 

  • Partners with the Product Management, Project Management and QA organizations to define, build and deliver products to market. 
  • Manages customer relationships and resolves high level issues/problems. 
  • Regularly interacts with executives and/or key clients. 
  • Authorizes projects, approves designs and cost estimates for projects, sets priorities, administers budgets. 
  • Participates in long-range planning. 
  • Responsible for ensuring overall budgets, schedules, and performance standards are attained. 
  • Participates in more critical day-to day operational issues, removes barriers, and resolves complex issues.   

 

Technology Management & Development
 
 

  • Responsible for the software engineering process and knowledge capture for broad and far reaching area of responsibility and makes technical recommendations to senior management that has far reaching impact. 
  • Collaborates with the Enterprise Technology Services to develop infrastructure, enterprise tools, and enterprise technology strategies. 
  • Partners with Legal on patent considerations. 
  • Hosts technology summits and works with other organizations to drive, develop, and implement technology best practices, aligning and coordinating processes and strategies. 
  • May manage relationships with medium to large vendors. 
  • Applies advanced technical expertise to provide input to tactical and strategic technology direction and establish methodologies. 
     

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Bachelor’s degree in a software engineering discipline preferred
  • Master’s degree or MBA strongly preferred

 

Experience

  • Typically has a minimum of eight years’ experience in an applicable software development environment
  • Typically has a minimum of five years of demonstrated leadership experience in a management/project management role
  • Demonstrated track record delivering on-time well architected, high quality software solutions that delight customers
  • Technical experience with business process management and workflow management tools and technologies and with proven experience leveraging these in building solutions for clients

 

Knowledge/Skills

  • Demonstrated successful track record of design, development, and completion of critical, complex projects in more than one area of functional expertise
  • Experience setting procedures, standards, and documentation
  • Experience with project management, with solid understanding of milestones, deliverables and resource scheduling
  • Demonstrated people management skills including leadership development, ability to delegate
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to collaborate effectively in order to influence others without direct authority
  • Demonstrated success of establishing, managing, and maintaining effective working relationships at the business unit/senior management level, internal and external to an organization
