Job Description:

The Area Managerwill be responsible for overseeing the merchandising of one or more local Garden Centers. Under direction of the District Manager, the responsibilities of an Area Manager will include maintaining store appearance and merchandising to company standards, implementing store promotions and achieving sales within a timely manner. The Area Manager is also ultimately responsible for ensuring the highest level of customer service throughout their Garden Center(s) and is expected to be a role model and leader who can solve problems, make informed decisions, and be able to manage their time and workforce to achieve maximum results.

Tasks and Responsibilities:
  • Assist the District Manager in the following areas:
    • recruiting and hiring of the most qualified staff to meet their area needs
    • coordinating sales, promotion activities, and pricing of merchandise
    • overseeing the preparation of merchandise placement and displays
    • training and coaching the staff in execution of daily tasks and to maximize sales
  • Prioritize, plan, and coordinate work activities, and manage time and resources so that work objectives are met.
  • Overall performance management through constructive suggestions and encouragement, performance expectations, and honest feedback.
  • Manage issues relating to Garden Center maintenance and safety, including training and related compliance.
  • Ensure that proper channels of communications exist between the Garden Centers and Bell Nursery USA.
  • Oversee compliance of merchandisers with established Company policies and standards, such as safekeeping of Company property, personnel practices, security, sales and record-keeping (including those records relating to inventory)procedures, and overall maintenance of the Garden Centers by performing required audits.
  • Help solve problems that affect the Garden Centers service, efficiency, and productivity.
  • Conduct requested inventories and cycle counts, as requested ensuring its accuracy and completeness.
  • Support and augment store personnel during peak times and take over merchandiser activities during off-season periods.
  • Timely process of new hire, personnel changes and termination paperwork.
  • Develop working relationships with THD management in each assigned store.
  • Oversee execution of pog’s and all aspects of merchandising standards.

  • Ability to maintain a fair, consistent set of standards as they apply to work force.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear, concise, understandable manner, and listen attentively to others, understands material, and provides instructions to all employees.

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to work a full-time schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
  • Retail management experience preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple sites and employees at those various sites.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills, motivation, organization and ability to follow-through with assigned tasks and goals.
  • Availability to travel to stores within their area and district.
  • Basic knowledge of horticulture and gardening.
  • Ability to move or lift merchandise weighing up to 40 lbs.
  • Effective communication with customers and store personnel.
  • Must be able to work in a fast paced environment for long periods of time.
  • Basic computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
