Cultural Museum Collections Manager

Job Description:

GENERAL

Following Museum Standards and Best Practices, Collections Manager is responsible for the management and maintenance of the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum’s collections in assistance to the Museum Curator.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops and organizes operational procedures and policies including collection maintenance

    records, updating, accessioning and deaccessioning objects

  • Creates and maintains legal documents, histories of use, and physical histories of permanent

    collections objects

  • Enters, researches, and maintains data in the Collections database
  • Supervises Collections interns and volunteers
  • Assists in facilitating the deaccession of objects as directed
  • Researches existing artifact histories and updates object files accordingly
  • Prepares condition reports
  • Monitors environmental conditions within the museum galleries and collections

    storages and retains information in a both a digital and hard-copy log

  • Monitors objects for damage and/or deterioration, evaluating the necessity for conservation, and prepares proposals for conservation
  • Develops and implements inventory/cataloging projects
  • Implements housekeeping policy of artifacts
  • Gives tours, lectures and informal classes on discipline or collections-related topics
  • Actively participates in exhibit preparation, public education, or other museum programs
  • Assists the Museum Curator in the following areas:
    • Monitoring legal and ethical implication and care standards
    • Facilitating care and control of collections
    • Initiating, developing, and implementing collections policies
    • Overseeing object movement, internal and external
    • Designing and controlling storage areas
    • Collections Policy Manual
    • Incoming/Outgoing Loans, including correspondence and invoices, permits, or other forms
    • Assists in and conducts collection-related research as directed by Museum Curator
    •  Assists in grant proposal preparation
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements:

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum BA (MA preferred) in History, Art History, Museum Studies, or related field
  • Two years experience in a curatorial museum setting, or graduate schooling within the

    museum field with emphasis on collections management

  • Experience in digital registration software systems
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs.
  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
