JOB DESCRIPTION:
Group Underwriter II Summary:
*Accountable for profitability, selection, and retention of group products within employer groups in an assigned area or market through the development and execution of a business plan following divisional goals, which result in profitable, controlled growth.
*Prepares renewal recommendations by monitoring, evaluating, and reporting changes in account exposure throughout the year and implementing needed adjustments to current rate, plan, and policy provisions utilizing account rating formulas including utilization trend analyses, strategies and methods for minimizing adverse selection, and a creative pricing approach.
*Prepare prospect proposal to ensure the profitable acquisition of new cases including accurate and timely calculation of account rates through the evaluation of group demographics, industry, experience, expenses, adverse selection, trend factors, and profit. Initiate, negotiate, and communicate proposal recommendations, new policy implementation, and renewal adjustments to internal and external customers through personal contact, email, and letters while maintaining cooperative relationships at all levels.

Group Underwriter III:

Initiate, negotiate, and communicate proposal recommendations, new policy implementation, and renewal adjustments to internal and external customers through personal contact, email, and letters while maintaining cooperative relationships at all levels.
*Apply technical knowledge through participation in specific special projects utilizing verbal and written communication skills and decision-making abilities. Provides technical training to Analyst, Group Underwriter I, II, Analyst, Para-Actuary, and Sales staff.

SKILLS OF THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:
Group Underwriter II:
Bachelor’s Degree From Four-Year College or University Business, Mathematics, computer science, insurance, management or related field preferred
Business, Mathematics, computer science, insurance, management or related field preferred
• Proficiency with PC Windows-based software, including Microsoft Office applications.
• Proficient knowledge of risk principals associated with group insurance preferred.
• Proficient knowledge of insurance contracts and compliance issues.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Excellent analytical skills.
• Good organizational skills and ability to handle multiple priorities
• Leadership skills.
• Ability to work independently and address issues through own initiative with minimal assistance from team leaders or manager.


Group Underwriter III:
Bachelor’s Degree From Four-Year College or University Business, mathematics, computer science, management, insurance or related field preferred
• Five or more years group underwriting experience
• Strong knowledge of risk principals associated with group insurance
• Strong PC knowledge required, including experience with Microsoft Office applications
• Strong knowledge of insurance contracts and compliance issues
• Demonstrates a good understanding of organizational procedures and goals.
• Excellent analytical and creative problem solving skills
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple priorities
• Strong leadership and mentoring skills
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to be persuasive and to negotiate
• Ability to work independently and address issues through own initiative
